Summary:

The convenient vendor returns to give Colio a second, larger fragment of Shiron’s book, and Colio gets an extended flashback.  Young Shiron was hated for her ability to see the future in her dreams, and rather than use this ability to get rich gambling, she got suckered by Sindeki Church’s Wizakh.  With a few dresses and some fresh fruit, Wizakh gets Shiron under his control and learns the location of Shlamuffen (one of 7 legendary weapons) and also the crystallized dragon underground.  Unfortunately, Wizakh uses this knowledge to get everyone sick with Dragon Pneumonia (DP), and the only thing Shiron can do to protest is to refuse to wear any of Wizakh’s dresses.  Eventually, Shiron rebels against Wizakh, but she is captured and executed by one of the kingdoms she tried to sell the cure to.

It seems like Shiron always knew that Colio would come, and has been talking to him, sorta.  However, when Colio finishes the flashback, he finds himself face to face with Hamutz.  Hamutz steals Colio’s fragment in exchange for elective bomb-removal surgery that Colio’s health insurance doesn’t cover.  While Hamutz claims to have made Colio human, things are looking bad for the Armed Librarians.  The whole thing was an elaborate trap, as Hamutz catches DP from Iea, and Mirepoch and Mattoalast catch DP from some corpses used to breed the disease.  Segal planned the whole thing, using Shiron’s prediction of the first typhoon in 100 years veering off towards Toatt Mine, because storms interfere with Hamutz’s sperm sensory threads and greatly lower her hit rate.

Reaction:

Wait, so did Segal indirectly lead to Carthelo’s death and then directly infect Iea (who appears to be, quite literally, a whore) with Dragon Pneumonia?  This episode was much more interesting than I expected, with Segal’s elaborate feint with DP turning out to be a trap to capture Hamutz.  Hamutz got to pick the battleground, and I don’t see how her hit rate can really be that bad while within melee range (unless she just sucks when she isn’t hacking, like Canaan).  I thought it was really cool how Hamutz taunted Colio about making him human, but I am really interested in seeing how that wound heals.  Hamutz tore that scar tissue off like it was a lump of seaweed, but perhaps it was special scar tissue that allowed easy access into the chest cavity.

It seemed awfully convenient for Iea’s aptly named cat, Calico, to lead love-struck Colio to Iea, where perhaps Colio will stumble upon a cure for DP.  The vendor who gave the Shiron fragments to Colio looked very similar to the old guy (Lascol) who gave an unnamed book to Volken (stuck babysitting the library!), and I suspect they are the same man.  I got the feeling Shiron was talking to Colio every time she spoke to the sun, but I didn’t quite understand why she rebelled and yet took the fall for Wizakh.  Shiron must have felt this was the only way, or else she wasn’t really that great at seeing the future in her dreams.

Someone tell Wizakh to get back to Ergo Proxy, where he belongs. And get an easier name to spell.

I guess anesthetics and antiseptics wasn’t included as part of the bomb removal surgery.

Interesting episode, although I don’t get why Harmutz lets herself get infected by DP, since she already saw that Iea was infected via her hacking.

I hope I’m not the only one who saw all the mentions of DP and thought that maybe Kabitzin had started reviewing adult titles….

The Colio surgery scene was everything that I had hoped for and more. Hamutz totally manhandled him and left him crying on the floor like she had stolen his innocence or, er, stuck her whole arm in his chest.

I am really interested in seeing how that wound heals

Not that everything has made sense so far, but how the hell does he feel energetic enough to chase tail with that enormous hole in his chest? And please don’t tell me that’s the power of love….

The way I see it is that he always had a big hole in his chest, so it’s not that different except for a little lost blood. And, as everyone knows, blood loss is no match for the power of love.
