Spice and Wolf 2 02

Summary:

Horo reveals that she kant reed 2 gud, but she’s really looking forward to going to the festival with Lawrence.  Unfortunately, Lawrence wants to learn about legends from the north, and Mark points him to gigantic metal merchant Guy Bartose and his unpopular alchemist friends.  While Lawrence is off visiting smelly goths in the alchemist district of town, he has eager Amati babysit Horo at the festival.  Guy’s friend Dean “Deanna” Rubens reveals that the village of Yoitsu was destroyed by a moon-hunting bear, Irawa Wir Muheidehende.  Yoitsu was probably near a town named Renose, at the base of the Roam river, north of Proania.  It seems that Deanna has also heard of “Horo of the wheaten tail.”

When Lawrence gets back, both Mark and his wife Adelle chide Lawrence for leaving his hottie “nun” alone with Amati.  Amati is a hot self-made man, and Lawrence realizes that he should be very jealous.  Fortunately, Horo stumbles home alone, although she bears gifts: a fine fur scarf and a pyrite fortune-telling cube.  Apparently Horo made up a story about being a nun indebted to Lawrence, and Amati was very moved.  Also, when Lawrence hears about the fortune teller scamming people into buying pyrite, he decides he wants in on that action.  Before Lawrence can start on yet another stupid scheme, however, he receives a message from Lanto and breaks into a sprint.

Reaction:

I wonder what that message was, but I figure we’ll find out next episode.  I can’t help but shake my head at Lawrence scheming about pyrite either.  None of his strategies really revolve around supply/demand; they are all get-rich-quick schemes that are essentially scams.  I think I hate him more and more with each episode.  I don’t even understand why he couldn’t accompany Horo to the festival.  He didn’t have an appointment with Guy yet, and it’s not like Guy isn’t around all the time.  This made no sense, but I guess it was just a way for Amati to get screen time and cause trouble.

Horo was cute in this episode, especially when she hid her ears/tail under the sheet and caused Lanto to think he just interrupted some heavy heretical lovemaking.  I find it kinda odd that Horo loves wearing pelts so much, but I guess they’re not wolf pelts so it’s all good.  Also, since I’m watching Canaan this season, every time I see Horo staring I can’t help but think, “Oh no, I can’t see the colors!” or “Time to go hack some GPS.”

Horo must pretty dang good at hacking GPS, since nobody in this show seems to be able to get theirs to work.

I think if there were a major drug trade during this time, Lawrence would break the sound barrier getting in on that, and he would die within a month, tops.

Lawrence would go right to trying to scam the best armed and most dangerous drug dealers too.

Sounded like she was trying to get in on the act, actually. :| Difference being, she is made of awesome and Lawrence’s not.

You have a point, Lawrence really is all about get rich quick schemes. It’s kind of sickening really. But then again he’s a traveling merchant and I’m assuming we’re missing out some of the stuff he’s carrying because there isn’t time to explain in the show vs the novels.
