Summary:
Mr. Huang is meeting up with Xu Jian Fa, the head of the rival Chinese mafia, and Lizzie’s on the scene to take Jian Fa down for the Godoh group. Although Mr. Huang helped Scythe Master run from Inferno, he knows too much and is designated as a target. Before Gregor and Parker can take Jian Fa’s men down, Cal races in on her bike, crashes through the front door, does a flashy disappearing trick, and shoots Parker and all of Jian Fa’s men. Cal gives Jian Fa a fighting chance and although he manages not to shoot himself in the butt, Cal is the only one who walks out of the meeting alive.
So it’s clear that Cal has a problem with self-control, but she isn’t Scythe Master’s plaything either (though he does get to hang out with her while she showers). Cal’s main goal is to kill Reiji, and the next day Cal sends Ellen an envelope with a spent bullet case as a challenge. Reiji is delayed by the appearance of Scythe Master in the school yard, and Scythe Master mentions that he merely nurtured Cal’s hatred as opposed to the massage and brainwashing that he used on Ellen. Reiji shows off the calm judgment and self-control that make him a balanced Phantom in not killing Scythe Master in school, while Ellen finally meets Cal in church where they can fight uninterrupted.
Reaction:
This show is getting more awesome with every single episode. I love the revelation that Scythe Master turned Cal into Drei by nurturing her innate jealousy and hatred. I need to see these flashbacks! Did Scythe Master show Cal tons of footage of Ellen pretending to be Reiji’s girlfriend? Was Cal rewatching Kill Bill every night? Did Scythe Master piece together fake gossip magazines and tabloids with stories about Reiji’s latest exploits? Inquiring minds want to know! I can’t wait for next episode, because I desperately want to hear Ellen talk smack back at Cal. You know Ellen had to have noticed Cal’s big chest and wondered what Scythe Master was doing the last 2 years.
This episode was clearly meant to make viewers question who their favorite Phantom is. If you want loyalty and flirty acting, Ellen’s your girl. If you want to taunt your victim and put on a good show, call up Cal. And if you want a well-rounded assassin who will bring tons of hot ladies to the afterparty, Reiji’s the easy choice. Way to diversify the portfolio Scythe Master! It was kinda odd to find out that Scythe Master was hanging out with Mr. Huang and not Colonel Roshnenko this whole time, but it’s obvious now that Scythe Master is the man.

I’m sure we’ll learn what Scythe Master did soon enough. I actually thought we might learn in this episode, but obviously not. I’d say it’s obvious that he told Cal that Reiji had abandoned her, though that just doesn’t seem to be enough of a motivation for the amount of hate that Cal apparently holds toward Reiji.
He probably also told Cal that Reiji either killed, or had a hand in killing, Judy and was deceiving her about it or something. He perhaps even might have gone far as say that the bomb was planted by Reiji himself to kill her so he could run off with Ellen (and Reiji’s surprise at seeing her alive would only reinforce this explanation). And the fact the Reiji had worked for Claudia, who undeniably had double crossed Scythe Master and betrayed Inferno wouldn’t help.
And regarding Mr. Huang…I wonder if there is ultimately going to be more too that. They seemed to go out of their way to show him with Scythe Master. And for what reason? Just to show that Scythe Master was a scumbag and would betray even the people who helped him? I don’t seem to buy that, since I thought that was already apparent. I just have a feeling there is more there than what we’ve seen.
This late in the game it was probably just to show what a jerk Scythe Master is. This will set up the final showdown where Ellen tells Scythe Master she got a new masseuse before shooting him in the head.
The idea of Scythe Master telling Cal that Reiji set up us the bomb is so awesome and twisted; I like it!
And the most-underappreciated show of the season really revs up. They definitely managed to give Cal a really charismatic entrance, I’d say that right now she’s stealing the show
Time for the famous standoff…
Cal is definitely stealing the show, and I love how much smack she talks, even if it is completely superfluous. Lizzie slamming her headset in frustration is just the icing on the cake.
A great episode IMO and they make Cal even more awesome then she was in the Visual Novel.
BTW Kabitzin, remember when you talked about the Phantom family (Reiji, Ellen and adopted Cal)?
I want Phantom Family to happen so badly! I am ready for Ellen to ground Cal and send Cal to her room!
Ellen and Reiji could start doing Unlimited Blade Works when Cal brings a guy home:
MOM! DAD! Stop it!! You’re embarrassing me!!!
This show keeps getting better and better. The last two episodes have really upped the show quite a bit in my mind. I can finally watch this show and not endlessly think NOIR/BEETRAIN GIRLS WITH GUNS
P.S. Cal = evil Pacifica Casull
Now I just keep thinking of that scene when Mahoro’s letter to the council is being read out and there’s a big cheer when her request for bigger boobs is stamped with a big red NOT APPROVED.
And I also absolutely loved it when Cal threw her towel onto Scythe Master’s head as she walked out to the balcony.
Though SM could have gotten right back at her by taking a long good sniff of said towel and making some incredibly pervy comment. Miggs anyone?
When the hell are they going to show some Cal-Scythe Master training?!
