Summary:

Maximilian’s older brother has gotten through to the king and it’s likely that Maximilian will be removed from command within the month.  Naturally, Maximilian gathers his forces for a big display of force in order to lure the Gallian Army out for a decisive battle.  By some amazing luck, the Gallian forces oblige, and so the Naggiar Plains are turned into a crazy battlefield.  Georg holds Squad 7 back on the rear lines as support, so you just know some Gallian squad is gonna get its ass kicked.

Squad 1 takes the lead as half the militia joins the regulars in assaulting Maximilian’s forces.  Faldio is quite cunning, and uses ditches to ambush the Batomys; by striking the radiators after the Batomys fires, Squad 1 is able to turn the Batomys into a sitting duck.  That’s when Maximilian presses his Easy Button, and Selvaria busts out onto the scene with her ragnite spear and shield.  Selvaria’s destructive powers are unbelievable, and she wipes the entire Gallian force out within a matter of minutes.  Only Faldio survives, as Ramal sacrifices himself to push Faldio into a ditch.  When Alicia visits a visibly shaken Faldio, Faldio takes out his sidearm and shoots Alicia from behind.  Maybe now she’ll stop throwing away that crappy ragnite rock that Faldio keeps regifting.

Reaction:

Once again, the spoilerific OP robs this episode of any real suspense.  We’re meant to think that Faldio went crazy with PTSD, but I’m 99% sure that he is following the Dummy’s Guide To Powering Up Valkyrur.  Cordelia better watch her puffy-pants, because Faldio is probably gunning for her next.  All the research Faldio was doing and the hope he had of not needing to use Alicia’s Valkyrur powers coincide nicely with how he apologized to Alicia before pseudo-teamkilling her.

Aside from Faldio’s tactics, this episode was unbelievably stupid.  After Welkin explained that the Imperial Army was running out of time and support, why would the Gallian Army rush into a decisive battle and give Maximilian exactly what he wanted?  Time and time again, the winning formula in this situation is to use guerrilla tactics to hit supply lines and slow down the invaders, while dragging the conflict out and exhausting the enemy.  At least lay some damn mines on the plains!  Cordelia rushing to the front lines was also sheer idiocy and clearly solely for the purpose of hand delivering the spear and shield to Alicia.  Maurits probably couldn’t believe his good luck at having Cordelia on the front lines and exposed to danger.  Finally, good riddance to Ramal, as he was annoying enough in this episode to ensure I wouldn’t miss him at all.  L2Tackle, n00bsauce.

So I dropped the show after episode 2, but I watched the new OP. Am I caught up yet?

I all seriousness, I think I would die trying to pick up this show again after most of the way through LotGH. Like suffering withdrawal symptoms of strategy smarts or something.

To be honest, I’m not exactly sure what the appeal of this show is supposed to be. I heard the game was awesome, but the anime hasn’t really shown me great storylines or battles. I like some of the characters, but the one I liked the most got killed off. As for the strategies… I wonder how nature is going to help Welkin outsmart Selvaria.

Yeah, that which makes a good game doesn’t necessarily translate to a good show. We’re all still reaping what the Super Mario Bros movie sowed so many years ago.

Both the Imps and Gallians failed combat and strategic planning 101… and it doesn’t look they’ll pass any time soon. I think Alicia and Selvaria battling out with their super powers will be much less stupid.
