Phantom Requiem for the Phantom 19 19 01Phantom Requiem for the Phantom 19 19 02Phantom Requiem for the Phantom 19 19 03

Summary:

It’s recap episode time.  We get to see Cal donning a crappy maid outfit and cleaning Reiji’s disgusting table.  Cal still thinks that $5 million is not quite enough to pay for Phantom; I guess she doesn’t have enough for the service fee.  Cal and Reiji talk about their families and Reiji lies about his family being heaven while Cal mentions she ran away from her father.  We also see Cal carefully putting her picture of Judy in a box in the closet; it probably got destroyed in the explosion, which means I better not see that photo crop up again later.  Finally, we watch as Scythe Master (who has had his eye on Cal for a while) meets Cal and reinforces her misunderstanding that Reiji lied to her about being together forever.  Except I guess Scythe Master’s correct, since Reiji is crossing the Mexican border with Ellen at that very moment.

Reaction:

It sucks to get another recap episode, but Phantom does recap episodes pretty well. It looks like Ellen and Reiji are going to cross the Mexican border, hop a plane to Japan, and pretend to be students so they can hang out with Daisuke’s sister Mio.  I also noticed that either Reiji has 2 full bathrooms, or there were some mistakes made in adding the extra Cal scenes.  The really disappointing part about these new scenes was how it was confirmed that the video store was only a few blocks away.  This means that Reiji (who was there when the bag blew) probably stayed there less than 5 minutes, because he left before Cal could get close enough to see people on the empty street.  He didn’t use his rPmm to scout out the building, and he immediately bailed on her even though Cal probably goes out shopping fairly often.  I guess Reiji was just really eager to have an excuse to see Ellen again.

Meanwhile, Scythe Master showing up at the end in front of a crying Cal was pretty nonsensical.  She didn’t think for a second that he might be a pedophile?  I bet if Cal knew about Scythe Master’s voyeuristic tendencies she would never agree to hear him out.  And can someone explain to me why recording live news turns it into line news?  Whatever the case, I felt really bad for Cal; Reiji is a jerk.  I understand that lolis aren’t really his thing, but he didn’t even try to check up on Cal.  It was also pretty lame that he didn’t ever get Cal a cell phone, because adding Cal to his family wireless plan would have been such a heartwarming moment.

Oi, don’t dump on Reiji too much. And about not liking lolis: If I had to place my bets nowadays how I expect them to end the story, I’d put 55% on Cal and 44% on Elen (and 1% on an unexpected strange original ending).

I will have to await masked Cal before I make my judgment, I assume.

Actually, Reiji was RELLY crushed by teh explosion, to the point that he tought of barging into Inferno HQ and slaughtering them all (if you choose to accept that idea, he does slaugzter them all, tough he ends dieing). He seriously believed that Cal was dead at that point and was gone to warehouse to be killed. Seeing that Ellen still needs him or she might return to being Ein, he decides to continue living until she is able to fully become Ellen.

Ah yes, and anime forgot to mention something VERY important: Cal waited in that apartment THREE full days. Her trust into Reiji was no doubt enormous.

That kind of emo is dangerous, Reiji! If I was Cal, I’d be pissed at Reiji too.

Nanoha taught me getting someone a cell phone is the first step towards indoctrinating them into your organization of pinhead bureaucrats. Shikabane Hime taught me new cell phone contracts apparently come with numerous death warrants. (Be sure to read all the fine print.) Futari wa Pretty Cure taught me cell phones are prone to infection by annoying yammering parasites. Cal is probably better off.

Ok fair enough, but if Reiji hadn’t thrown his phone away after Claudia’s call, Cal probably could have called him. Arg, the White Album parallels are unsettling me!

Yeah, It’s pretty easy to understand why Reiji was so sure Cal was dead.

Ask yourself: Would a big criminal organization like Inferno to have all the work of putting a bomb in a house WITHOUT making sure someone was inside to die? They would FAIL to kill an innocent girl? Specially using not 1, but 3 men?

Nah. Most likely, he thought Cal was the target, not him. And they would NEVER fail to kill her.

The reason because they bomb his house without Cal inside was… Scythe Master ordered so. He wanted Reiji to believe Cal was dead, or because he was planning to use her on a new experiment, or because he wanted Reiji to become emotially crushed like that. It was all perfectly planned by this sick, cunning old jerk.

Ok that makes sense, except that the plan would have been completely foiled if Reiji had waited even 15 minutes. I can’t hate on Scythe Master too hard even though he’s got his whole harem army yet he spends all his time painting masks and spying on ex-coworkers hooking up. The man clearly has skills and magic fingers.

Wow, I totally overlooked the two bathrooms. I guess the overly cute bathroom distracted me from the truth. The preview was weird though, so those two aren’t going to do anything but run. I seriously thought they were at least going to roll some heads. Didn’t Ein say they can’t escape from Inferno? This doesn’t make sense!

I don’t remember Ellen saying that, and if she did it would be super-ironic considering that Scythe Master and Ein did escape from Inferno once already.

What was weird is that the video store was like a block away from the apartment, but by the time Cal got there, not only were the bodies cleared away, but Reiji had left, and there were spectators and firemen all over.

I mean think about it, if you were a fire crew, and you get there and you see 3 dead bodies, plus a car that took out your closest fire hydrant with a dead guy inside, you’d think twice before sticking around, fire or no fire!

Or at least if the firemen stayed, how about spectators??
“Hey look mawww there’s them there three bodies and some big ‘splosion”

And actually when you REALLY think about it, Reiji was in the burned out apartment after the fire was over… but there was no Cal. Also he managed to stick around long enough for the firemen to put out the fire but he didn’t see Cal in the crowds. Also if Cal’s so smart, she would have seen his perfectly non-burned cell phone on the floor… unless Reiji took it with him, in which case she should have called him.

I’m a little disappointed that Scythe only had stills and not a full video of Clau x Daisuke’s night of Rising Dragon Passion on his screen. But I guess he’s not really into normal porn.
