Summary:

Horo and Lawrence are on their way to the Fuoania nobles’ heathen town of Kumerson.  Horo once again dreams of Yoitsu, and in her dream she is torn between choosing Lawrence and her brethren, only to turn and see that in the blink of an eye Lawrence has been reduced to a skeleton.  Just before town, Horo sniffs some high quality fish which leads Lawrence to a fellow Rowen Trading Guild named Fermi Amati (who goes by “Amati”).

Although Amati claims to be a nice guy because he’s a guildie, it’s clear he’s just trying to impress Lawrence’s companion.  Lawrence scores a nice big room (even though the Radora Festival is only 2 days away), and lives it up, dining on fresh fish and moeru wine.  Horo gets plastered on the nostalgic Yoitsu taste, and the next day Lawrence sells his nails to his old buddy Mark.  Mark attempts to show off some merchant skills, but he is a nail n00b (since he mostly trades wheat) and Lawrence gets a good price.  Still, Lawrence can’t help being jealous of Mark’s crappy store and apprentice Lanto, and that night he hints at wanting to ditch Horo as soon as they reach the famous onsens of Niohira.

Reaction:

The banter in the cart was excellent, especially as Horo immediately seized upon Lawrence’s desire to have a moe blob to care for.  I also like how Horo clearly states that she needs a baller, a shot caller, someone who can afford a nice room and good meals.  Lawrence needs to step his flattery game, even though it’s clear that Horo is quite taken by him.  Although Lawrence has yet to embark on any hare-brained schemes this season, I can’t forget how stupid he got last season and I’ve got my eye on him.

Naturally it didn’t take him very long to think about dumping Horo for his career.  If Niohira is close, can’t they just drive there and then go wolf form for the rest of the way?  Lawrence is clearly hoping to dump Horo as soon as he gets some onsen fanservice, and that’s something I can’t forgive.  The good end would clearly be to set up a sweet shop in Yoitsu, score a cute wolfy wife, and live happily ever, but I’m sure Lawrence will find a way to screw things up.  When I think of that awful silver coin scheme, I get mad and want to chuck apples at Lawrence’s head.

Fashionably late.

Here’s some advice: go watch episode 00 to get an idea of what this season’s gonna be about before you get to the awful merchanting schemes bits. Then you can DAWWW and LOLOL at the same time!

I took your advice and I was facepalming through the entire OVA just like Horo. I am starting to think that I really hate Lawrence… I was getting mad when he put the lantern on the bed next to Horo!

The animation is kinda crap, too. Looks like they made some big improvements in season 2 with the new studio. Did the new team do episode 00?

Oh man, if you want to chuck apples at Lawrence now, just wait ’til the arc really gets into gear!

This does not bode well for the season…

I agree, watch Episode 00 (aka the 2nd OVA), if only for completion. And Noora.

Lawrence is so weak to moe. When I watched Horo glaring at Enik, all I could think of was Winry’s 3-legged dog.

I like crazy scheming!Lawrence, if only because it is fun to see him worm his away out of the shitstorms he creates for himself.

Whut? I’m not half a dozen episodes behind everyone else this time? Must be a first! Good to see you’re following this one though…looking forward to what you have to say about Lawrence’s, ahem, business skills later on. By ep #5 I was facepalming so damned hard!

The animation still isn’t anything to write home about but if nothing else the backgrounds are pretty enough and the chemistry between them is even better than in the first season I think. Their relationship, such as it is, seems to be going somewhere now. The economics has yet to really gain my interest but it meshes a bit better with the character-driven side of things now. Still fun.

Awsome Kabits started on the “Wolfenstien’s castle” I mean Spice and Wolf. You think this was bad, wait till you get further in the series. Forget chucking apples at Lawrence’s head, you’ll need a whole frozen tuna and give his skull a good whack! Subsfuckinwhere seems to make some really good fan subs, but they’re a little behind some of the other groups. Agreed the animation isn’t awsomeness, but much better than before. Besides, the drama in this arc is drastic. Horo will literally wound your soul with the way she’s gonna act.

Lol Horo’s hangover face is full of win!

I actually thought Amati was a girl until episode 2. Damn these androgynous characters.

He was made for the bishounen fans. Holo ( hate having to write that. Horo forever!) is only using him for his looks, not his BRAINZ! mmm brainz!
