Summary:
We get a flashback of Siam finding a young girl in a ravaged village 2 years ago, and in that time he named her Canaan and taught her all kinds of firearms skills. He also taught her to hum and pretend to smoke with sugar sticks. Unfortunately, one day Alphard showed up (saying her name was Canaan) and then killed Siam on a train. Over and over again, Siam tells Canaan that she is different and should not counter hatred with hatred. None of this stops an upset Canaan from ambushing dolled-up, Daedalus Corporation shareholder Alphard at a banquet, but Alphard easily gets the upper hand in the standoff.
To prove that she no longer fights with hatred, Alphard lets Canaan escape, but not before taunting Canaan about how hatred is like quicksand. Meanwhile, a guilt-stricken Maria takes a dangerous walk through some alleys before getting saved by Yunyun. In another flashback, Maria remembers Canaan saving her from some Arabian thugs and this led Maria towards photography. Unlike Maria, Minoru has been doing real research, and Chiaki informs him that their editor thought the Borner marks looked like blood vessels rising to the surface. Unfortunately, the images are unclear because Maria is an elitist prick who refuses to use a digital camera, and Minoru had to take pictures of the negatives to get them analyzed immediately.
Reaction:
The flashbacks were kinda skimpy, although I noticed that the director tried to distract us with wet Canaan and wet Alphard. The best part of the flashbacks (besides giggling Canaan and the Phantom-esque training) was Canaan mentioning that blue is the color of hate. I guess it’s no coincidence that Alphard always wears blue while Canaan wears red. I’m not sure what red means, but gold/brown is near the top of the Colors That Won’t Get You Killed By Canaan list. The tattoos, Alphard killing Siam, and Canaan having an older sister make wonder if this whole conflict didn’t stem from rivalry over Siam’s love. If so, more harem animes need to go this route! I also laughed at Santana (who burned Canaan’s village!) taunting lonely Yuri about magic in the bed with Hakkoo, until I realized that he really actually meant magic in the bed with Hakkoo.
This episode reinforced my theory that evening gowns are the ultimate fighting outfits (and sensible fatigues are the worst). Maria’s emo was pretty annoying, but I guess when girls aren’t drinking tea, shopping, or making cat’s cradles they’re busy fighting and crying about stupid things. I don’t even understand why the fight with Maria made Canaan decide to go after Alphard, unless Canaan figured Alphard was trying to keep Canaan a spinster forever. While Canaan may be a great shot, she needs some serious work on her close quarters combat. I have not been put in this exact same hold, but I am 85% sure that grabbing the attacker’s ass is not the proper defense. Pulling the hair would have been my first guess, although I noticed that the halter string might get caught in the crossfire.

Or the ol’ kick in the groin or pepper spray.
Man, those two sure flirt a lot.
Man, this was a good episode. Especially the fight between Canaan and Alphard. Although for some reason Maria is still my fvorite character. Even though she was all emo in this episode, I can understand how she would feel at the sight of your best friend killing someone right in front of you. I think she acted properly, this show has a very lovable and realistic cast of characters; you don’t see that in anime too often nowadays. This is one of the best series I’ve picked up, I’m loving every minute of it and can’t wait to see how the rest.
I understand that Maria was shocked, but why did she originally think Canaan was a normal girl? Canaan just flipped into her 5th story window! That is not at all normal!
I thought Alphard’s usual outfit is black and grey…and wasn’t red the color of rejection?
Canaan just couldn’t resist lol. It’s not an opportunity that comes often.
Yeah, the story is getting pretty interesting, especially the history between Canaan, Alphard, Sham and the tattoos that Canaan and Alphard have.
That’s right, red was color of rejection. I’m not sure what that means exactly, since Canaan wears red now (but used to wear green). Alphard wears that blue cutoff jacket.
what? Was this a brief mention in the flashback?
I thought about this too, but she looked pretty good at CQC during the OP.
I thought about it some more, and I guess as long as you like to make cat’s cradles, you are are a normal girl.
What about the silver spoon, little boy blue and the man on the moon?
