Valkyria Chronicles 11 12 1112 01

Faldio is about to go Super Saiyan

Summary:

Prime Minister Maurits von Borg plans a small banquet for Princess Cordelia gi Randgriz.  Cordelia is still only 16, and so her regent Maurits does just about everything while she spaces out and feels sorry for herself.  However, this party is a pretty big deal because it informally strengthens the ties between Gallia and the Federation.  Naturally, Welkin and Faldio are to be honored for their victories at Vasel and Kloden.  I’m not sure why Faldio was only allowed to invite Ramal, but somehow Welkin got Alicia, Ramal, and Hans on the list.

Trying to catch me riding dirty

Radi and Selvaria also crash the party, pretending to be the Count and Countess Alseif.  Radi is interested in gathering information about a possible Gallia-Federation alliance, but mostly he just wants to make everyone jealous of his fake wife.  Damn that Maximilian, pimping out his woman to other guys!

You might be wearing shades indoors, but I can still see you staring at my breasts

This is where things get a little tricky.  It turns out that Maurits is working with the Federation’s famed Ambassador Townzen to bring Gallia under the Federation’s umbrella.  By having figurehead Cordelia kidnapped and taken to the Federation, Gallia will fall under the Federation’s protection and Maurits will be the natural candidate to take power in Gallia.  I know it’s wrong in principle, but what does Cordelia even do, besides dress up as a flying, rabbit-eared, unicorn-fish?

Even after 10 drinks, I still can't figure out WTF you are supposed to be

More importantly, Faldio is starting to feel jealous of Welkin, especially because of the hold Welkin has over Alicia.  Faldio tries to get Welkin to admit to liking Alicia, but has no success; you can’t really blame Faldio for putting bros before hos.  With Welkin refusing to recognize his feelings for Alicia, the way is clear for Faldio to work his smooth game.  After watching Radi pull in babes like a magnet, I was expecting to see something spectacular.  Instead, I got to watch Faldio give Alicia a piece of rock from the Barious Ruins.  Now I understand why Ramal worships Faldio.

Faldio's game is surprisingly weak and flacid

Alicia’s obviously not very impressed with the gift, since it just demonstrates that Faldio is as much of an otaku as Welkin.  However, while trying to round everyone up and avoid a sticky situation with Radi and Selvaria, Alicia gets lost and finds Maurit’s men showing our Gallian boys how to pick up hot chicks… using chloroform and a shot to the liver!

Nagi-sama!!! And it looks like that one goon is sneaking in a feel...

When Alicia’s kidnapping is made apparent (thanks to that ragnite crystal she dropped/tossed), Faldio rages and Welkin decisively seeks out Radi and Selvaria’s help in foiling Maurit’s plan.  Retrieving Cordelia and Alicia ensures that Gallia does not enter into an official alliance with the Federation, so it’s a win-win situation for everyone.  Alicia does her part in snapping Cordelia out of her self-pitying emo funk.  While Radi and Selvaria ambush the cut-off man, Faldio and Ramal trail the kidnappers.  At the critical moment Welkin and Isara (in the Edelweiss…) block the way, allowing Cordelia to jump to safety.

On the right is how the rescue looked through Faldio's eyes

The last goon tries to take Alicia hostage, but Welkin doesn’t hesitate for very long.  Having just been in an Alicia-hostage situation, he doesn’t hesitate in shooting the kidnapper at the first opportunity.  Of course it helps that the idiot pulls his arm back like he’s going to throw his gun at Welkin, instead of simply squeezing his trigger finger and killing Alicia.

These guys got more hot action than any of our heroes

Everyone is safe, although Alicia is upset about ruining Susie’s dress.  Welkin gives Faldio back the rock, thanking him for helping everyone realize that Alicia was gone.  At this point, Faldio can’t take it anymore and tells Welkin that he’s being an arrogant prick… and then admits to Welkin that he has a crush on Alicia!

When I'm not fapping to Ramal, I fap to Alicia

Reaction:

The plot wasn’t that great, but I loved watching Faldio give in to jealousy.  I know he’s not super-jealous about Welkin’s fame and accolades, but once Welkin starts pulling in the military babes without any effort or knowledge the pressure becomes too much for Faldio.  I like that Faldio is direct about it, but I’m 100% certain that Welkin will step up his game and win Alicia’s heart.  The only suspense is really if Faldio will die in battle or if he will be able to get over the fact that he couldn’t pick up a woman if she was weightless.

I thought a lot of the characters were superfluous in this episode.  Why was Hans there?  Couldn’t Marina have watched the little porker for one night?  And what was the point of having Irene there?  It’s odd that she’d be taking pictures considering she only has a radio show, and she didn’t really do a single thing with the information she learned.  I was also miffed that Irene didn’t get dressed up, because I like seeing characters wear different clothes.

It was interesting that Cordelia has the same color hair as Selvaria, since Cordelia supposedly has a bit of Valkyrur blood.  Apparently, however, the genes for red eyes and gigantic boobs are recessive.  I thought it was hilarious how even after Maurit tried to oust her in a coop, Cordelia had to retain him as Prime Minister because she has no idea how to run a country.  The ragnite crystal gift continues to make me suspect that Alicia is also at least partially Valkyrur, but the hair color throws me off a bit.

Speaking of incompetence, I thought it was absolutely shameful that the tricycle-truck could not outrun the Edelweiss.  Yes I understand that the Edelweiss is very fast and maneuverable (in spite of all that armor), but even a fast tank cannot achieve burst speeds of over 50 mph.  I was facepalming over and over again when the driver-goon tried to floor the pedal to mess up Cordelia’s jump and yet the distance between the tricycle-truck and the Edelweiss did not increase at all.  Also, the art had some very noticeable dips, but thankfully most of the shortcuts were taken with characters off in the distance.

Basically the only thing this kidnapping accomplished is to get Faldio to declare his intentions for Alicia to Welkin. No idea why Maurit bothered with it in the first place since he already runs the country.

I figure Maurit just wanted to wear that weird costume that Cordelia has on.

I’ll try to field some of those questions.

“Why was Hans there?” – Because he’s the mascot.

“And what was the point of having Irene there?” – She has a nice cleavage (even though we didn’t get to see it this episode, so yeah, I guess I don’t know either).

I’ve been finding more and more recently that it’s best not to think too hard about this show. It’s becoming clear that logic isn’t a high priority.
