Eden of the East 09

Summary:

Akira convinces Yutaka by getting a MLB player traded to the Carps, bumping their chances of winning this year’s championship to 99.98% on Yutaka’s Social Computer. Yutaka leads Akira through a crawlspace to his “secret base” and gets to work decoding the various purchase histories on Yuusei’s phone. Of interest are Akira’s round trip fare to Dubai and also his massive efforts to evacuate the site of the strikes on Careless Monday. Although this suggests that Akira is really a hero, Akira asks Yutaka to keep the information a secret from Mikuru and Saki. Yutaka agrees, and wants to help Akira win the game; in the meantime, Yutaka will continue to parse the data and call Akira with any new information.

After hacking into the detailed log, Yutaka suspects that Mr. Outside must be someone close to state power. Even worse, the logs reveal that Selecao #10 (Yuuki Ryo) is planning another missile attack in order to bring Japan back to the post-WWII era. Yutaka’s cell phone is out of batteries, so he starts the upload process and runs out in the new sweat pants that Saki bought him. Unfortunately, Daiju and Ryo were hanging out and spying on Akira, and this gives Daiju the perfect opportunity to force Ryo to run over Yutaka.

Reaction:

While an interesting episode, there were a few logical jumps that I wasn’t comfortable with. First off, I can send emails from my computer to someone’s cell phone; how am I supposed to believe that some genius engineer cannot do the same? And if he is stuck in his house, how could he possibly let his phone run out of batteries? And why wouldn’t Yutaka plug his cell phone in and call Akira? Yutaka didn’t even bother covering up his secret base when the girls came in. Obviously these mistakes were made to advance the story, but it was jarring to see some genius make such boneheaded mistakes. Even Daiju was getting into the act, by just snapping the phone in half and throwing it in the same ditch as Yutaka. How would that disable/hide the phone at all?

I am, however, still very curious about Ryo and Daiju. Daiju used to be a bureaucrat and Ryo works with bureaucrats now, so both are connected to the government. For some reason, timid Ryo feels guilty about running over Yutaka, but yet Ryo is ordering a number of missile attacks. Even more confusingly, Daiju mentions that Ryo is actually trying to prevent the deaths of a million billion gazillion deaths from missile strikes. How does that compute? Yutaka’s final words imply that Akira is a hero, but it wouldn’t be the first time this show has used clever misdirection. Also, Satoshi is a little bitch who is trying to use some really shaky evidence to get Akira in trouble.

In the fansub I watched, it also said his phone contract ran out.

The narrative is definitely showing signs of unraveling and I hope it isn’t because of the fact that they don’t have many episodes left to work with. Definitely agreed with some of the points at which one has to suspend disbelief and those errors seem pretty careless from my standpoint.

Another thought came to me when I watched that episode: isn’t Yutaka’s computer a combination of Wolfram Alpha infused with a bit of Nate Silver?

I liked that they at least showed Yutaka gaining a ton of weight. I’d like to see more weight fluctuations in anime =3.

I switched to a gmail account. I could have sworn I made the change in WP, but I guess I messed up.

This show needs less naked men.

the file was too big for a phone, they tell that in the next episode. and killing someone in person is something else than ordering it through the phone, but he do say something like “that will make us murderers” which is pretty strange, yes.

Man, you’d think some super-awesome phones could hold a lot of data and transmit information pretty quickly. How can those histories even take up that much space???
