This is worse than Indiana Jones
Just when you thought it was safe to read Naruto again, Nagato busts out another flashback. Naruto shares part of the blame as he quotes a line that Nagato once said to Jiraiya that inspired Jiraiya’s first book, The Legend of the Gutsy Ninja. I can only assume that this preceded The Legend of the Sexy Ninja which gave way to the Icha Icha series.
Stay out of Gotham, Riddler
In the flashback, Nagato beats up some total scrub ninja (and uses Kagebunshin… wut…), and the scrub mentions that more assassins like him will come. Nagato says he will break the cycle of violence, and besides he isn’t scared of a ninja that doesn’t even have a real village symbol on his forehead protector. Back in the present, Naruto says he will become Hokage and he’ll totally have Amegakure’s back when he takes office. Presumably, this will happen after Tsunade sends Amegakure the massive bill for destroying Konohagakure.
Oh gross, your arm is growing fungus!
Nagato realizes his flashbacks cannot compete with Naruto’s flashbacks, and decides to trust in Naruto. Nagato then pulls his crusty arms out from the wheelchair and gets ready to perform a technique. This better not result in another crappy flashback or some stupid henge no jutsu.

Jiraiya used Pain as his inspiration for the main character of his first book, who he named Naruto, who was taken by Minato for his son, who inherited Jiraiya’s will and shares uncanny similarity to the character Naruto in the book.
So… Naruto is really Nagato.

Yeah they are one and the same. Nagato is just Naruto from an alternate reality and Kishi was messing with all of us this whole time.
