As bloggers, we always wonder how to measure our own progress and success. Different bloggers use different metrics. Many rely on RSS membership but I have seen blogs with thousands of RSS subscribers that hardly send any traffic to a blog they link to. Others such as Technorati rely on the number of links but we all know how links can be easily manipulated. Although numerous blog ranking systems exist based on different factors most seem to suffer in varying degrees from credibility/measurability issues. blogRank solves many of these issues by using a mathematical model to provide the ultimate ranks for blogs in a certain category.
For bloggers, blogRank shows you how well your blog compares to other blogs in your niche.

I saw another one of these ranking services launched yesterday, and it looks like blogRank uses a portfolio of other metrics to come to a rank for your blog. The site is still a bit beta-ish, and it’s unclear what some of the metrics even are (way to not use title or alt attributes, guys). I had to look at the bottom to figure out one of the icons was for another comparison site, Compete (which is kinda neat). Also, I get the feeling that most of the RSS are listed as “n/a” because someone put in the old Feedburner code. These links have changed since Google recently started porting all Feedburner accounts to “feeds2″.
When I first checked, SS!AB ranked 22 in the Anime category (Interests > Anime). The rankings might not be set, considering that 58/125 metrics were “n/a” when I checked the site out. That or they haven’t really bothered with the Anime category, since it’s more worthwhile for a new metrics site to focus on the Blogging category (whose table is much more fully populated). Hopefully as the site matures, the metrics table will be more comprehensive, because it’s nice having a list of rankings and competitors to check on from time to time.

I will be posting more detailed information about the different metrics we use in blogRank shortly. Truth be told the metrics are only 30% of the formula. It is how much weight you assign each of these metrics that is the harder question to answer. As far as some of metrics showing NA, this is most likely (99% of the time) due to to the blog not publishing their subscribers numbers.
I just use alexa.com for all my ego deflating, stat comparing needs.
My current position (Soon to probably drop though) is 44th, with a score at 91%. So I guess that’s an A of some sort?
hmm, I think I ranked 55th? Except there seems to be no way to see past the top 25 or edit any of the info you typed in. Interesting concept, lame execution.

btw psgels (I should probably email you, but I’m too lazy to find your contact page), I’ve noticed that your screenshot images take a very long time to load, and later noticed that your screenshots are png files. Not sure what the difference between png and jpg/jpeg are, but I think you should probably switch to jpg, if that will fix the loading issue. Maybe its just my browser, but yea, thought I should let you know. :love:
Nah, the problem here is my image host. Imageshack has a lot of flaws, but it’s the best thing I can get for free.
*sigh of relief* For a minute there, I thought it was my anti-virus/firewall acting over-protective again! Generally, I never had any problems with png files, so I knew it had to be something else, just couldn’t put my finger on it. Gotta live through da struggle yo! :love:
When it comes to screen captures, I’ve noticed big differences in file sizes when capturing in PNG vs. JPG.
For example:
a 1280×720 JPG – 108K
a 1280×720 PNG – 687K
JPGs should get you smaller file sizes without sacrificing image quality.
I don’t understand most (almost all) of the ranking categories. But I’m happy to see WRL is somewhere there. If you can break it down for n00bs like me here, it’d be awesome.

But how do you check anything beyond the top25?
Hey, thanks for the info on this service, I went ahead and signed my blog up for it, and the result were interesting to say the least. I don’t know if it is my blogging service’s fault or a error on their end, but when I ran the rank my blog feature it came back saying I’ve got 0 unique monthly viewers?, (I get between 4500-5500 page views a day), and I have no RSS subscribers?, (I know I have some subscribers because some of them communicate with me via E-mail instead of using comments). But, overall I think that their service is one of the better ones for ranking blogs. Again, thanks for the info on this service.

Hahaha, 72nd or somethingrather. I’m not horribly surprised considering I don’t post as often as many others in the community. I was rather surprised at my apparent ~4k incoming links though. Hot damn. o_O (I think this is just an indication of how often I comment on other people’s blogs?)
One week later we are up to #18. We had dropped to 38 steadily, and the rankings made little sense. Now they look a lot more realistic, with sites like dannychoo.com, RC, and places you can watch anime online as the top ranking sites.
