Summary:

Imperial Prince Maximilian Gaius Von Reginrave crushes the Gallian forces 4 days sooner than anticipated, leaving him time to get his puffy pants re-tailored. When he returns, he orders no-nonsense Berthold “Devil of the Empire” Gregor to reinforce the supply lines running through Kloden, while flippant Radi Jaeger guards Berthold’s rear. Meanwhile, Maximilian is off to the Barious Desert, and he commands busty Selvaria Bles to accompany him, in case he needs her camel humps.

As Maximilian suspected, Gallian General Georg von Damon wants to attack the supply depot in the Kloden forest. Georg is a pompous ass, and he refuses to let the Militia join his forces in the attack. This turns out to be a blessing in disguise, as Georg’s forces are completely annihilated and Largo polishes the toilets to a blinding sparkle. HQ then orders Squad 7 to attack Berthold’s heavily-entrenched forces, but at least Faldio gets Captain Eleanor Varrot’s permission to allow Squad 1 to give support.

Reaction:

If you drink from someone else’s straw, that’s an indirect kiss. So if Faldio gets his hands all up in Alicia’s panties, isn’t that like an indirect crotch fondle? Or does this not apply to clean panties? Anyway, while the parts with Alicia walking in on topless Faldio and getting harassed by various male commanders was silly, I liked the setup of this episode. Georg was hilarious, and I loved how he forced his troops to stay and defend his personal retreat, while telling the aide to look forward to the next POW swap.

I think Welkin took one look at Georg and knew that a head-on assault in the forest would be suicide. Plus, I’m sure Welkin was pissed about all the animal trophies. I would expect Welkin to draw up some kind of hit-and-run plan, and I bet he’ll be pissed when he sees how Berthold will sacrifice his own troops as a decoy. Hopefully next episode will have a chess match of a battle between Berthold and Welkin, and not another display of how the Edelweiss is completely overpowered.

Well, if not overpowered, the Edelweiss will be severely outnumbered, along with Squad 7 and Squad 1. There’s really no way of them taking on that entrenched position head-on, so I’m expecting some unconventional tactics from Welkin.

THIS, despite the fact that it’s pretty much a given at this point that we KNOW that the anime directors are not military tactics enthusiasts….

It’s inevitable that Welkin will use some feature of the forest to defeat Berthold. My gut instinct says triggered mudslide (vaguely reminding me of Code Geass’s tip-the-floor tactic), but I am worried it will be something stupid involving pollen or feces-throwing monkeys.

Monkeys throwing poop would, arguably, represent a major improvement over the tactical schemes we have been treated to thus far though… ;P

The monkeys would probably be more accurate than Alicia, too…

TJ April 30, 2009 at 10:03 pm

We all no that there are no wild monkeys in Europe, and the pollen tactic doesn’t work on everyone. I’d say something involving skunks, badgers, and bears. Or else set the forest on fire and burn the base down, but Welkin would never do that…

What if it was one of those forests that have to burn down in order to spread their seeds? Welkin would be all over that.

Watchman April 30, 2009 at 10:51 pm

There’s no skunks in Europe either though, and both badgers (which are kinda tiny, really) and bears are actually rather timid. Plus both are rabidly solitary…
The European ecology is sadly rather short of animals that might be turned into weapons.

Wasps and other noisome instects, though…?

Maybe dump some muthafking snakes in their muthafking trenches?

Myssa Rei April 30, 2009 at 11:07 pm

Recruiting the local wildlife on short notice? Possible, but not only won’t it go against Welkin’s ideals, I think that level of tactical thinking is beyond the capability of the show’s directors.

Kabitzin April 30, 2009 at 11:08 pm

What if you modified the Edelweiss to shoot snakes out of the barrel?

Watchman April 30, 2009 at 11:17 pm

Eww. And splatter the Imperial soldiers with the remnants of dead snakes ? Kinda nasty, though probably psychologically effective.

Myssa Rei April 30, 2009 at 11:29 pm

Would that count as biological warfare? I mean, these are dead snakes and all.

Watchman May 1, 2009 at 12:54 am

No, just disgusting. Unless the dead critters spread diseases anyway, but I’ve a hard time seeing how that would be tactically useful for Welkin & Co…

“Ha! Inside the next week a quarter of you shall develop… the flu! Tremble, foolish Imperials!”

Kabitzin May 1, 2009 at 1:12 am

Boars and Swine Flu?! That dastardly Welkin will stop at nothing!!!

Myssa Rei May 1, 2009 at 2:11 am

Speaking of swine flu, won’t next week mark the debut of Squad 7′s mascot the winged piggy?

Kabitzin May 1, 2009 at 2:15 am

I want to see the winged pig take on the winged dog in Eden of the East.

TJ May 1, 2009 at 11:24 am

Right, there are no skunks in Europe. My bad for mentioning that. That foul liquid they spray would be a formidable weapon though. It’s true that Europe is a little short on wild animals, but that can all be augmented by attaching a freaking laser to their heads. It worked for sharks right?

I think the Edelweiss can just use its huge speed advantage and run circles around the enemy tanks. While all the Imperial tanks are chasing Edelweiss, Alicia and co can take the base (by charging head first into enemy fire if we are to believe to OP sequence).

Myssa Rei May 1, 2009 at 12:35 pm

The mobility of the Edelweiss would be negated by the forested terrain though. If it can’t maneuver well, it’ll be easy pickings, and no matter how (relatively) advanced its armaments are compared to the imperial tanks, it’ll get swamped eventually.

Watchman May 1, 2009 at 6:12 pm

That really depends. Large vehicles in general find it an utter pain to try to maneuver in woodlands, on account of all the trees in the way and whatever, but the Edelweiss would actually probably do better than most of its contemporaries as it probably has a lot higher power-to-mass ratio to negotiate terrain and the mass to flatly crush lesser obstacles.

As a rule of thumb though, the paths open for a tank to travel through in a forest are going to be rather limited (which is why IRL they primarily stick to roads); OTOH, this bites both ways, as it would be at least as difficult for the Imp tanks to then try to flank the ‘Weiss, with the added fun that it’s quite free to take potshots at them with that big-ass gun it mounts (which pretty definitely outguns the shit out of the short-barreled “howitzers” of the Imperial tanks), and most of the time they would have to retaliate with only half of their total firepower, being unable to bring their hull-mounted guns to bear due to having to try to maneuver through the woods.
Well, not that they had thus far evar actually used those hull guns, but meh…

Conversely, the ‘Weiss could then fairly simply reverse back the way it came to the position where it first opened fire from, keeping its well-sloped frontal armour facing the enemy and merrily shooting away while frustrating attempts to outflank it. Properly executed, it could well pull off one of those “Tiger at a chokepoint knocks out ten Shermans” effects – and thus far at least the Imps haven’t been employing their armour in truly massed formations, so it’s not like there were ultimately *that* many tanks for it to fight anyway…

Random junk: the weird gun mantle of the Edelweiss’ main gun kept bugging me, in no small part because it looked familiar but I couldn’t place it. Playing good ole Close Combat 5 supplied the answer by accident – the thing seems to be heavily inspired by the one on StuG III Ausf. G.
On another note, looking at the picture of the thing at the official page, I couldn’t help but notice that the hull seems to have a hatch to the right of the one for the driver – this position was IRL normally occupied by the radio operator, who also usually operated the bow MG. Similarly the commander’s hatch on the turret seems to include a raised “half-turred” with some kinds of visors or vision slits, a device whose purpose IRL was to allow the vehicle commander at least limited 360-degree visibility without having to poke his head out to get it shot off. This would suggest that the ‘Weiss indeed was designed for a crew of at least four (the gun apparently has an autoloader…), and thus Welkin and Isara are operating it at half complement…

Watching this show feels like watching all the cutscenes between battles in some strategy game (this anime is based on a console RTS right?) and then with really crappy battles. Sort of the opposite of playing a RTS I guess!

Oh btw I think clean panties don’t work the same way as dirty unfortunately…

A console turn-based tactical RPG AFAIK, but yeah, more or less.

That fat General guy gave me some weird Super Mario vibes… And they definitely missed the opportunity to have big granny panties! It totally fits her character! *sniff sniff*

Edelweiss

You know, like, for realz, I’d totally link to that Sound of Music clip, but like, I’m probably too late in the game to do so =(
