Summary:

Yuki wows her packed sausage-fest audience, the Sakura-dan do a decent job although it sounds like Matsuyama Menou never showed up, and Rina rocks two venues so hard that you’d think Eiji would appreciate her more. Rina even finishes her concert and sprints to the stadium to surprise her loyal fans with a live concert! Still, Yuki’s performance (dorky dancing and all) gets everyone on their feet, and Touya is shocked when he suddenly remembers meeting loli-Yuki for the first time on that mountain. Eiji wins his retarded contest and has a trippy private talk with Touya about how Yuki will forgive infidelity on Touya’s part but not on her own part. There is then some BS about how Yuki has fun with and charms the God of Song.

This is when the hilarity ensues. Since it’s Christmas Eve, Yuki gives Touya a new phone before heading in the opposite direction of her double. There’s no explanation for why Yuki can’t go celebrate with Touya, but she declares the phone ban over. Touya gets a ride with Yayoi, but resists boning her for once, only to find that Mana is stealing Haruka’s puppy-in-front-of-door trick. Fortunately, before things can get too statutory, Yayoi returns to give Touya his gigolo pay and rushes Mana to the hospital after noticing the girl had a fever. Touya then heads off to comfort angry Haruka, and things go from bad to worse when Akira runs over Haruka’s bike and yells to Touya that Touya’s dad collapsed… like a week ago.

Reaction:

This episode was badly animated and anti-climactic, and yet for those who love to laugh at the show there were tons of goodies. I was pretty much consistently giggling throughout the whole episode. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Not one female paid to see Yuki’s concert, aside from maybe that girl that bumped into Touya to become his newest Goddess of the Day.
  • Akira doesn’t watch the road or the gas gauge. He spends the whole night bitching about Touya, and then makes wounded Misaki push the car with him. Is there any wonder why this guy couldn’t get a date for 5 years?
  • I laughed so much when Rina’s managers couldn’t catch her. I guess all that track time paid off; did she even need the car? I was practically yelling at Rina to slide into home plate when she was racing to the stadium, but alas I think she settled for a double.
  • Yuki buys Touya a new Mysonic phone and tells him the ban is over, and still can’t get him to pick up the phone. She also tells him she loves him and he doesn’t respond. Happy Birthday, Yuki (at least I remembered)!
  • Eiji reads Touya’s mind over and over by reading the text off the top of the screen.
  • Touya corners Mana in a totally eroge moment. Things get even better as Haruka spots the student becoming the master and runs off angrily… and then gets her bike run over by Akira in Misaki’s car.
  • Akira knows where Touya is after Touya (on foot) catches up to Haruka (on a bike).
  • Touya tells Mana to lose weight.
  • Yayoi busts the death-glare out twice, first when Touya tells her to talk to the hand and then when Mana reacts with shock and disbelief to Yayoi’s assertion that Yayoi is the same age as Touya and Yuki.

I’m amazed no one got in a crash with the snow and all the bad driving, but the only casualties were Touya’s dad and Haruka’s bike. Although we didn’t get any answers this episode, I enjoyed this pseudo-finale so much that I can’t wait for next season (this fall). BTW, shouldn’t Touya’s dad be dead by now?

(sorry, but I must spam your site with all the screencaps I can muster! ITS A MUST!!!)

…the production values were pretty bad… and not in a “I  cheese” sort of way… it was just that bad. Especially this: THE HORRORS!!! There were some nice-cheesy scenes, but then they got smashed by Forrest Gump and Rocky (ADRIAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNN!!!!!!) (smashed by Rocky? GET IT?!?! AHAR HARHAR A-*EXPLODES*)

Speaking of Yuki’s concert, I ROFLCOPTERed so hard when the audience was like “YUKI-CHAN” in that deep-creepy-old-geezer-voice!… are all her fans raging otaku? :( Where are all the chicks? I was even more disturbed when they… waived pencils in the air… Were the 80s that bad? There should be disco lights and Light Sabers! WHERE ARE THEY?!?! *punches*)

The car-out-of-gas scene was pretty funny too. That Akira really is fail. I mean, how can he forget something like that? Of course you can’t depend on him to remember these things. And oh yea, MISAKI WAS DRIVING!!! (err, this is Japan right? so the driver seat is on the opposite side, right?) WTF? And shes still recovering from her wound (he said it was getting better but still. How does he plan to impress her if he doesn’t know the basics? (now that I think about it, Yayoi also drove… but thats different… its sexy. I guess Misaki drove so they can get the handicapped parking)

On the topic of Yayoi, she must really have some smelly upper-lip for Touya to reject her (even more smelly than his!). and then she had that “OH NO YOU DIH-N’T” face going on XD priceless!

I definitely LOVED the Touya-Mana scene. As he went to touch her hands and cheek, I had goosebumps all over as I witnessed the resurrection of our lord and savior Makoto (NSFW)… but alas, nothing happened between them  . If Touya actually took her to bed, this would definitely be an awesome cliffhanger, and not this stupid your-dad-is-dying end. I mean, sure, I can wait til winter for more episodes, but there just wasn’t that BANG BANG feeling with this one. Like, you know Mana definitely wanted it with her tsun-tsun “Oh, SO UR GONNA HAVE UR WAY WITH ME, AREN’T YOU?!?! WELL, I’LL JUST STAY UNDER THESE COVERS… WITH MY CLOTHES OFF… PRETENDING TO BE SICK… SO YOU CAN SCREW ME!!!” (and lol at the Beck/that-one-ep-of-gurren-lagann animation)

Another big downside was that we didn’t get to hear any of Rina’s songs  …they’re really catchy too!

Also, the drive-by-shooting scene was cool too :D … My poor Haruka… and her bike! D: You know they did it on purpose too! They must have been thinking:

Misaki: hmm, how do we get Touya’s attention?
Akira: I know! Lets ram into Haruka’s bike!
Misaki: LOL OKAY! :3

I swear, Haruka should just go Kotanoha on em! She doesn’t deserve this! D:

and to end the pic-spams, who is this? Looks alot like Yayoi (not that I’m complaining! … and there could have been a bomb in there :( ) and where the hell is Frankie? He was the coolest guy in the whole series!

That is so hilarious, and I didn’t notice it at all. Yuki appeals to a very specific demographic.

I think Misaki likes men that treat her like crap. That’s why she liked Tamaru at first and why she likes Akira now. I bet she got really hot when he made her push the car with a badly sprained ankle.

and lol at the Beck/that-one-ep-of-gurren-lagann animation

I was kinda reminded of several moments in Birdy the Mighty Decode. I wonder if animators feel guilty about this sort of thing or if they figure they will just fix it for the DVD release. It’s like the original broadcast is just the beta version…

My take on this is that those were the critics in the audience who were sent to review Yuki’s debut concert. They were so caught up by her amazing vocals and mad dancing skillz that they forgot why they were there and spontaneously started waving their pencils, wishing that they had thought to bring giant foam #1 fingers instead.

lol, thats alot of critics man!… and pencils O_O

wishing that they had thought to bring giant foam #1 fingers instead.

ah yes, the invention of the #1 foam fingers! =3 I remember it like if it were yesterday, and how it led to current innovations like the Hulk Hands ;P

Nazarielle April 1, 2009 at 2:03 am

Whoa, I totally missed that Yuki’s concert was a total sausage fest. I mean, I know she’s obviously targeted towards guys, but there’s no girls out there that like to hear her sing?

I’m amazed no one got in a crash with the snow

You know, I was really surprised by that too. I kept waiting for Yayoi to crash or something and kill both her and Mana or something. Haruka I think crashed, but she didn’t seem like she was hurt at all. Too bad, that would’ve been the perfect opportunity to kill her off. Although it would’ve been even better if Akira had run her over along with her bike.

Ah, Touya, it’s amazing how hard you can fail and yet you keep surprising me by failing even more. I can only imagine what the last few episodes are going to be like.

I kinda expected Yayoi to kill Mana after the remark about Yayoi’s age.

I find it interesting that Akira annoys me so much more than Touya. They both fail in creative and spectacular fashion, but Touya does it without as much whining.

Nazarielle April 1, 2009 at 2:41 am

Really now? Touya can’t stop whining about how it’s not fair that he and Yuki have to be forcefully separated by Yayoi and how he has it so rough with his dad tossing him on the street. Not to mention him bawling over the fact that he can’t understand Yuki’s feelings. Well no fucking shit you dipshit you’ve hardly even talked to her for the whole past fucking year, what do you expect? I don’t expect to understand the feelings of my cousin who I meet all of once a year around Christmas, but you don’t see me bawling in a car to some chick I’m cheating with.

Kabitzin April 1, 2009 at 2:50 am

Yeah, but Touya is whining about a girl, whereas Akira is whining about another guy…

Nazarielle April 1, 2009 at 5:13 pm

Hmm… touche~

Jesus159159159 April 1, 2009 at 2:19 am

Although it would’ve been even better if Akira had run her over along with her bike.

WTF?! Whats with all the Haruka hate? Your cute Kitty-gravitar is very misleading  / ;P

I mean, sure, shes everyone’s (okay, even i’ll agree now… wait, wasn’t I the one who made the connection of her being everyone’s: ) bitch (in the first place?), but like… she doesn’t really do anything… she just wants her bro back… a new bro. MMMMMMMM

(oh, and Misaki was driving. Akira is too much of a pussy to drive / he doesn’t have his license yet =3)

I’ve written one more of my long-assed winded character assessments here.

Kabitzin: I’m convinced that Yayoi didn’t even understand Mana’s reaction at all. For Yayoi, it was an innocent question about the real Yuki. There was no way she could know that Mana was mistaking HER for Yayoi. (Therefore, what I saw was confusion, not a “death glare”) ^_^

Also, the kicker is not that Yuki’s gift was a phone, it is an _answering machine_. Hurrrr… this is gonna be Touya’s undoing.

Kabitzin April 1, 2009 at 12:49 pm

Oh, I’m pretty sure that Yayoi is going to dump Mana’s body on the side of the road after Mana’s remark =3.

It would be interesting if the answering machine somehow got Yuki mad at Touya, because that would mean that Yuki found out on her own and not from any of her “friends.”

Friends don’t let friends date Touya or Akira.

I’m a bit disappointed that the only true fatality in this episode was Haruka’s bike. Sure Mana has pneumonia, and Touya’s dad is probably in a coma (and will wake up with amnesia), but no one got beaten or more than halfway scorned. All we got was more setup for next season, which I’m down for, but I wish that we didn’t have to wait… unless the waiting means that they are going to maintain decent animation standards throughout the second half of the series. I fear that won’t be the case though.

But as you noted, this episode was good for laughs even if it never went anywhere. I liked how Haruka got pissed that Touya never tried to molest her, and how Akira and Misaki’s relationship continues to be portrayed as a punishment that Misaki has inflicted upon herself. It’s hard to believe that Akira is more of a loser than Touya, but his actions don’t allow for any other conclusion.

I think that Touya’s refusal of Yayoi comes down to him thinking that he could trade in a true goddess for a younger model… the girl he bumbled into at the concert. The girl, however, wore a hat to ward off the cold, so Touya should have known that she is far too sensible to go out with a loser like him anyway. I’m looking forward to what the next season will reveal about Yayoi-sama, as we have been deprived of her backstory for far too long… and given the recent soap opera twists that the show has taken, I wouldn’t be surprised if the girl that Touya ran into was actually Yayoi’s sister. Time will tell.

And the whole thing about Touya and Yuki not leaving together after the concert felt very odd to me, until I realized that Yuki just wanted to call and see if Touya had plugged in his gift yet… her nerd roots are showing. Of course, he didn’t, and now her birthday booty call plans are shot. I bet that Touya won’t even listen to her messages, even after he has Haruka hook the damn thing up for him.

And now the wait begins….

Would be awesome if Touya’s dad woke up with amnesia and just started macking on girls left and right. I wonder if he will die and if this would even make an impression on Touya.

After Yayoi is done sabotaging the Yuki-Touya relationship, she is going to get to work hooking Touya up with Mana to completely destroy President Kanzaki’s company and the Sakura-dan.

It would be hilarious if for some reason someone ended up needing a phone and Touya gave Yuki’s present to that person. I could totally see it happening too.

Touya’s dad dying would make a huge impression on Touya. He’d probably be so ecstatic about inheriting all his dad’s stuff, including the house, that he’d completely forget about everyone.

Kabitzin April 2, 2009 at 1:58 pm

LOL, the doctor that recorded time of death would be Goddess of the Day.

Random inquiry: is there anyone in this series who doesn’t acutely fail in life and/or as a human being…?

Rina, of course.

Rina is the one person in that entire fucking UNIVERSE who is not a massive failure.

(also this episode was a lulz and a half. Still raging about not getting to hear Rina’s song)
