Summary:

Ironically, Misaki has to redo the costumes in grayscale because they are too fruity for the thespian club. Touya is dragging during his tutoring sessions, and at one point Mana almost kisses the konked-out Touya before a pop song on the radio and his terrible breath dissuade her. Later, at the school festival, Mana learns that Haruka is not Yuki and that Touya was telling the truth, because Yuki has hijacked the guy-group HAPPIZU’s event to look for Touya and make an announcement. Naturally, Touya was too late to hear the announcement, even though Yuki had planned the whole thing around him (during their awkward meeting last episode).

Tamaru won’t let Misaki in to see her own play, and since ticket-scalping hasn’t been invented in 1986, Misaki and Touya go on an adventure through the crappiest storeroom ever. They reminisce a bit until Touya tries to find out Misaki’s feelings about Akira, causing her to run off and get struck down by God and a pile of metal rods. It turns out Misaki was always jealous of Yuki, but when Touya suddenly kisses Misaki and confesses to her, she refuses him. Touya feels guilty and takes Akira’s place giving out fliers so that Akira (after himself confessing) can help rush Touya’s sloppy seconds to the hospital.

Reaction:

First off, what was up with the utterly crap animation this episode? At first I was raging, but actually this was a pretty interesting episode. The whole Misaki x Touya thing has excellent implications; all this time Touya was hoping to eventually convince Misaki to have a threesome with him and Yuki, while Misaki was giving Akira the run-around in hopes that Touya would eventually dump Yuki. Way to go from a great friend to a crappy one, Touya! I especially loved the line where Misaki wanted Touya to see her children. This would seem perfectly normal because Misaki put so much time and effort into the costumes, but more importantly these were children she made with Touya.

Speaking of children, I think Mana’s been slipping some date-rape drugs into Touya’s drinks, which explains why she is willing to pay for his tutoring services while he just sleeps. I figure once Mana gets tired of Touya, he’ll wake up and find his kidneys on the black market. Also, I think Touya and Yuki are going to break up. Just like in his dream, Touya can’t stand not being everything to Yuki and he is completely intimidated by her fans. I’m not mad at Touya; he’s a bad boyfriend and we already knew it from last episode. Long distance relationships are hard, and Yuki will be better off without that loser.

A real man would have knocked that evil drama weenie on his ass, even if Misaki was “just” a friend. Sadly, Touya is not a real man, as further evidenced by him thinking “I’ll go wherever you take me,” and then chickening out of the secret adventure rendezvous by talking about Akira, and then going for the kiss and a delivering a weak-sauce love confession after she experienced head trauma. At this point I don’t know how I expect him to act any differently as he has an unbroken track record of failing, but somehow I keep getting disappointed by him. I just wonder who he’s going to break next week.

causing her to run off and get struck down by God and a pile of metal rods

This made me LOL inappropriately. If only it were Touya under there….

If Misaki were smart, she would have made it so that Tamaru’s final costume version was accidentally 2 sizes too small.

So like… did Touya ever call Yayoi back after making out with her in the car?

Well, she did plan the secret tryst where Tamaru would be sure to hear her cries of passion….

Sadly, I am sure that he did not call Yayoi-sama. I still hold a tiny bit of hope that she will make Touya into a stage slave (ala Detroit Metal City / GWAR) for the Christmas Eve steel cage match between Eiji’s Girls and the Sakura-dan.

I think you meant a foursome with Yayoi included and if Rina gets tired of her bro-con, she can join too.

Mana was pretty bold in this episode aside from the fact she was abou to kiss Touya. I mean, she even waved and shouted to Yuki! I have high hopes for this loli. ^^

I kind of missed Akira, so I’m glad he’s back. To me, he is like the light or neutral party in this chaos of the sexually deprived. I mean, he had the wardrobe, the attitude, and he even helped the new mother Misaki (remember, she had children). They should do a spin-off or something for him. I bet he could get all those girls with both hands tied behind his back.

Anyways, not my favorite episode, but it was something Also, I’m glad the producers used Hirano Aya to play Yuki’s role. Why? We all know what happens to people who bad mouth Hirano fans and this episode explained the power of fandom.

I wonder if Akira knows that Misaki likes Touya. I suspect he knows, which is why he never made his move and refused that book in the beginning.

I hope we go back to Yayoi at some point, if just to find out who keeps calling her and sending her letters.

I find it really amusing that every blog or forum I go to, people say they didn’t like this episode (especially) because they don’t like Misaki. I mean, sure Misaki is a big puss for not taking out Tamaru, but is she that bad?

I was always under the assumption that there was more to the story than just Misaki rejecting Tamaru. I figure they had a one-night stand, and she broke his weiner or something. :(

Well… at least when it comes to me personally, I’ve been biased against the weak-clingy type out of personal experience ^_^;

It’s rather that the Misaki story in itself is the one out of all girls I’m least interested in, because it’s the most canonic imho. More Rina and Mana pls!

You bring up an interesting point. More than most harem-ish shows, White Album has been very fair with its screentime. In fact, almost all the girls have gotten the same amount of attention. I think this is a mistake, because we hardly know anything about the main characters, aside from Touya. With only 4 episodes left, what can we possibly learn about any of the characters? This makes me fear that this will somehow end up being just a story about Touya and how he dumped his now-famous girlfriend because cell phones had not yet been invented.

halfadeckshort March 3, 2009 at 1:36 pm

The problem with Misaki is that she’s perfectly ordinary. She would have been a good choice of girlfriend for Touya since she seems fairly stable and doesn’t seem to be afraid of working, but there’s not much to say about her beyond that. She has proven that she won’t really stand up for herself even when people treat her like dirt, and besides wanting to be with someone else’s boyfriend (but not taking action to make it happen) she doesn’t seem to have the key elements necessary for the bad end that we all see coming. I mean, Haruka is confirmed crazy; Mana could have Touya put in jail on pedo charges (after she removes his kidneys ;) ); Rina has the devilish gleam in her eye (and beats everyone else not named Yayoi on hotness); Yayoi has to be seriously broken to be making out with Touya; and Yuki may do something crazy when she finds out what her useless boyfriend has been up to, and at the very least she’ll break what’s left of his heart. So, of all the potential sources for fire/stabbing/melo-Dorama, Misaki is the weakest one of the group. I think people would be reacting differently if something crazy had gone down in this episode, but Misaki, true to form, went out “not with a bang but a whimper.”

While I thought Misaki was pretty boring prior to this episode, I liked the confession and I thought it brought a lot to the Dorama Table. Now we got Akira drawn into the mix thinking that Touya is on his side, but really Touya tried to make his best buddy’s crush into his rebound chick. This is even better than what Ai did to Miyokichi in True Tears!

Seeing Touya do everything he can to justify to himself that he just doesn’t love Yuki anymore makes for compelling entertainment. He just can’t admit that he doesn’t love his girlfriend anymore now that she’s making her dreams come true. Also, Touya prefers delivery and hates carryout.

halfadeckshort March 3, 2009 at 2:09 pm

I never really had a problem with Misaki being boring, as her motivations seemed pretty clear from that first phone conversation she had with Touya when it looked like she was wishing that the phone receiver was his ear. I just knew that it wasn’t going anywhere, and like you said, I think that they’ve used a lot of screen time on her that could have been better utilized elsewhere.

Also, Touya prefers delivery and hates carryout.

LMAO. If only he had his father’s work ethic this would be a very different show.

!!!

White Album… the second half

I guess that answers the question of how they’re going to wrap this up in 4 episodes. And there I was thinking that we were less than a month away from major fireworks….

I recently heard about this as well. After thinking about it, I believe this is very good news. The problem thus far with WA has been that time was too evenly split between all the girls. I didn’t see how they could wrap this up in just 4 more episodes.

However, this gives us the chance to have some really nasty fireworks during the Xmas Eve concert, and then have season 2 be the aftermath. I want to see if Touya gets all nasty like Tamaru after Misaki’s rejection!

Mana almost kisses the konked-out Touya before a pop song on the radio and his terrible breath dissuade her.

LOL! To be honest, I sort of get that “smelly-upper-lip” feeling whenever I see Yayoi kiss Touya (especially with the reeeeaally big OM NOM NOM mouth) (don’t misunderstand, I’m not saying that MY lips get smelly when I see that scene… you get what I mean)… hmmmm but yea, I realized that I really love pouty-lipped characters because I couldn’t lend a Big person a pencil because… you know how (well, this is if you have pouty lips, or rather, it’ll be easier with pouty lips)… so yea, you know how you could make like a duck face with ur lips, or like, scrunch ur lips til they reach ur nostrils, and like, you smell ur upper lip… and it smells bad… I want a gf like that… I… I have a fetish with funky upper lips… :(

Speaking of children, I think Mana’s been slipping some date-rape drugs into Touya’s drinks, which explains why she is willing to pay for his tutoring services while he just sleeps.
