Summary:
As punishment for losing Michiko, Atsuko gets reassigned to a crappy police post in Ilha Azul. Her duties now consist of chasing pet monkeys, picking up garbage around the ruins, and taking care of petty thieves. One day Atsuko get called in to arrest a thief, and the incident reminds her of robbing stores with Michiko in the good ole days. Unfortunately, Atsuko wasn’t very sneaky and got caught, while Michiko used the distraction of Atsuko getting assaulted to gather up tons of phat lewts. Anyway, the thief’s name is Vanessa Lee and she is a poor, hungry orphan.
Vanessa came to Ilha Azul with her dad to explore the Temanaga Ruins, but after he died in a river she had to take a job on a coconut plantation. Atsuko is clearly reminded of Michiko, and eventually agrees to venture into the ruins with Vanessa to look for the Golden Vase. In the end, the gasses underground overwhelm the two of them, but Vanessa appreciates Atsuko’s help and decides to should go and look for a wannabe-pro musician boyfriend that left a while back. Atsuko decides to act on the newspaper clip of Hiroshi she saw (I guess it wasn’t a hallucination), and signals to Ricardo that it’s time to go to the “City of Tomatoes.”
Reaction:
This episode was only ok, as Atsuko really can’t hold a candle to Michiko (or Hatchin). Vanessa wasn’t too bad, and I liked watching her headshot the monkey with a coconut. Poor Marmalade… The parallel between Vanessa and Michiko was heavy-handed, and I wasn’t surprised that Atsuko decided to leave Vanessa to chase the much bustier Michiko. It’s nice that Atsuko has motivation to continue her journey, even if she has to settle for a scheming old guy instead of a funny young girl as a partner.
I love how even though Ricardo complained about taking orders from a woman, he’s followed Atsuko to Ilha Azul so that he can continue to leech off her. While following Michiko’s stalker works, just searching for clues about Hiroshi would have the same result. Maybe the police could even be waiting in ambush once in a while. I can’t wait to see what happens the next time Michiko and Atsuko meet, but it will probably end with Atsuko happily getting beaten up by Michiko.
