Continuing from last time, Pain destroyed much of Konoha village, but Tsunade used the last of her chakra and sent out her slugs to protect the village. Unfortunately, “protect the village” really meant “have a hot slug make out session with all the villagers.”
Too bad the slug gave Iruka-sensei a fake phone number
There was a quick shot of Kakashi so I figure he’s probably not dead. He can’t die before we find out what happened to Rin. Tsunade is a sitting duck without any chakra reserves in her forehead jewel, so Pain respawns his robo-tentacle Path and tries to take advantage of her.
He knows what he wants
Fortunately, Naruto is able to intercept with a surprisingly quick and silent Rasengan. Way to do your job, random unnamed ANBU guy. Next time, Naruto shows off his new power and fights all 6 of Pain’s Paths, even though the real Pain is sitting around somewhere else drinking tea and eating crumpets.

I assume Kakashi is alright and maybe Shizune’s soul (or whatever) will get returned when Pain is defeated. Not a bad chapter, though several things were left unexplained. Is Naruto able to do the Rasengan one-handed yet? I figure he can channel sage energy in battle through use of his clones, though if you think about it that would accumulate the energy at a reduced rate (since the kage bunshin split Naruto’s chakra evenly). I’m not sure if Naruto will be keeping his new robe, but I think this is the first time we’ve seen anyone summon a whole frog squadron into battle.

Man this post makes me wish the Naruto anime wasn’t sucking like crazy. Also makes me wish for the days of the Chunin Exams, and has me wanting to read the manga.

been waiting for quite a long time to see such battle scenes and naruto actually learning new skills. Hopefully the giant frogs don’t disappoint
The anime was always especially draggy, even when it was entertaining. Unfortunately, this just got worse after the exams and I dropped the anime series once it entered filler hell. The manga continues to move at fairly brisk pace, though.

Yeah, I’ve dropped the anime as well – somewhere between ep 60-80 of the new one. A large range, but I don’t remember.
