Kabitzin’s December 2008 List

Kabitzin on December 26, 2008 · in Progress Sheets

Christmas has passed, and we’re wrapping up the end of 2008. There were some pretty good episodes this month, although there was some shuffling in my top five this month. Unfortunately, now we enter into that dead space between seasons, so next month will probably be very sparse.

Top Five This Month:

  1. ToraDora: The group dynamic has really been impressive and ToraDora has successfully tread the line between humor and dramatic storytelling. The rest of the group continues to pick up the slack for Taiga, but even she hasn’t been that bad lately.
  2. Michiko to Hatchin: Now that our duo has temporarily parted, I have to say that Michiko is much more interesting than Hatchin. It’s probably because we don’t know what happened to Hiroshi and Michiko, whereas Hatchin is more of a blank slate.
  3. Casshern Sins: I marathoned all the way to 12, and it was quite a ride. While the details about Luna have been sparse, Casshern’s quest has been moving. I like Friender as the dog who could bite his comrade in the nuts at any second.
  4. Kannagi: The downer episodes really weren’t as entertaining, but I suppose it’s what has to happen for a decent wrapup to the season. There’s barely been any Nagi the last two episodes, and all we’ve gotten is melancholy Jin. It’s too bad one of the funniest shows this season has to limp to the finish line.
  5. Gundam 00 Second Season: I get the feeling we are sinking into the stupid period of the series where decisions make no sense and mecha get caught up in a leapfrogging arms race. I don’t know how this happened, but suddenly I actually care about Saji and Louise. This is something I could never have predicted in season 1. I’m waiting for Gundam 00 to get a third GN drive on its crotch. That would totally pierce the heavens.

Rising:

  • Xam’d: Lost Memories: This show is so mysterious! I still am not quite sure what is going on and where allegiances lie, but now that wings have entered the equation I am having Code Geass flashbacks. I am disappointed that the Tessik villagers don’t use those little jingle-guys more as Bob-ombs.

Falling:

  • Yozakura Quartet: The final third of Yozakura Quartet was just terrible. The story went nowhere, and I have no choice but to conclude that the anime completely mutilated the manga.

Agreed on Kannagi limping. I’d be more than happy to leave plot to the manga readers and enjoy some easy comedy instead. I retain half an eye on Casshern, which might have been more my cup of tea from the offset.

Toradora and Kannagi have been the biggest surprises for me this season, definitely. I didn’t expect to enjoy either of them. I actually dropped Toradora after 2 eps… however, I came back on a whim 2 months later and now it’s my #1 show for the season too. I watch the show entirely for Kawashima Ami.

Also nice to see a mention for Bounen no Xamdou. Flew under the radar since it “airs” on PSN, but it holds up the usual high calibre of Bones’ productions.

Is the new Casshern really that good? If so, YESSS!!! This makes me even more excited for Tatsunoko vs Capcom… that will never come to the US… :(

Xam’d is just amazing! The recent episodes left me on the corner of my seat… which is funny, now that you mention Code Geass, if I had a v-jay instead of a penor, I could totally pull off that scene… you know, that scene with the table *nudge nudge*! and I definitely would! Xam’d is just that good! Although I was sort of hoping for some woman-abusing during that “sleep with me if you want!” scene. The studio is such a tease! I think I see the connection of their name now… speaking of Bones, the would-be(or will-be)-gf of Akiyuki has an amazing set of knockers… They just get bigger and bigger… the same goes for Nakiami. Just how much are they hiding under there? O_O
