Summary:
The town festival has arrived, and both the Hiizumi and Sakura families must do a special ritual 7 times in 7 days. It sounds impressive, but really all this involves is Akina opening up a door. Then Hime sits with her spear and thanks the spirits of the Nana-Gou until she falls asleep. While the YLCO participates, Yuuhi uses the time to ogle all the ladies of the town (especially Rin).
After the ritual, everyone gets together to party and get drunk on water. Even Mariabelle gets wasted and starts complaining about Yuuhi. Yuuhi also gets trashed and doesn’t even get up to help Ao when Enjin pays her a visit. Enjin and Shinozuka capture Ao, and Enjin goes so far as to taunt Ao about how she can’t bring herself to stab a fork into her brother’s body. As Enjin continues to chuckle, the rest of the YLCO arrives for a battle.
Reaction:
Once again, not very much happened, although watching everyone get drunk was insightful. The part where the ladies that Yuuhi got with in the past (who are now old and wrinkly) tried to hit on him was awesome. I am a bit skeptical about how Youkai get drunk off water, because wouldn’t this mean that almost everything gets a Youkai tipsy? Do Youkai drink nonpolar solutions or something? Or do they sit around with water bottles in brown paper bags?
I wonder if Enjin’s team is going to try to force Ao to help them to protect Gin’s body. When Enjin first showed Ao the dream cake, I immediately thought the cake was a lie, but then it turned out to be real. It’s rather disappointing to find that Gin’s special move was really just a way to divide a slice of cake into little dainty pieces prior to consumption.

Ep 8 is good but this show is freakin slow. Also Enjin is one hell of a bastard.

Actually, some readers of the manga mentioned that it was actually SAKE that they were drinking, not the youkai water in the anime. Chalk it up to goosing the censors, as they wouldn’t want the kiddies watching the show to get any bad ideas.
Does Japan have some kind of *seriously* asinine broadcast code about showing alcohol and/or the underaged drinking it? ‘Cause this wouldn’t exactly be the first occasion this same blatantly transparent issue pops up.
The only rule I’m aware of is that whenever they air an episode with an axe murder, they have to show a nice boat first. I assume it’s a derivation of the rule it’s not assault if you announce your attack in advance.
It also seems in Japan it’s still fine to smoke on screen whereas this has been banned from Western productions. TV and film have always been considered a device for propaganda or public education if your prefer an euphemistic term. After all people will slowly understand things they see on TV as normal and part of reality to a certain extent. Blah?
