Summary:
Sayaka’s kinda out of it as the girls discuss ghost stories during lunch. She’s got a great new part-time job, but she’s been feeling strangely tired. Yukino’s really into the recent reports of ghosts in the school, though Sayaka’s really freaked out by the stories. Later that day during gym class, Sayaka sees a ghostly girl on the bottom of the pool and nearly drowns. Yukino also runs into the ghost girl while grabbing her bag. Could the school be haunted?!
Of course not. Souta shows up and finds that the reason people are seeing ghosts is because they let a marketing company install crapware on their cyberbrains. CrapMarket pays people (like Sayaka) to leave their cyberbrains on at night so that CrapMarket can use the extra cycles for marketing research. They’re trying to develop a pleasing avatar for an educational program, but their garbage collection is horrible. The cached data that wasn’t deleted shows up (ironically) as a frightening ghost. Souta then happily tells Sayaka that she is out of a job.
Reaction:
Leave it to Minamo to somehow tie this into the larger picture, but this episode didn’t mesh as well with some of the other ones. I get that we are supposed to ponder what would happen if we rented spare brain cycles to others, but the issue didn’t seem as awesome as dog internet. At least now I know how Masamichi was able to pay for that awesome home office that Eiichiro supposedly bought for him.
The best moment in this episode was when Sayaka met Souta and immediately started crushing on him. Unfortunately, Souta only Metal-bangs women with full-time jobs, but Sayaka is welcome to reapply when she has a better job title (e.g. Secretary General). I was kinda raging this time against those people who make bad crapware, but this is why bratty little kids shouldn’t be given admin privileges (even of their own cyberbrains).

Well, it was very nice to see the girls in swimsuits and the episode had lots of funny faces. And a HEXDUMP! WOAH HEX4TW! We also learned that the swim teacher has a nice pair of boobies. Selling spare cycles of your brain is really sick though.
If you donated them, like for SETI@home, would that be acceptable?
