Macross Frontier 19

Summary:

It’s Aimo Memorial Day, and Grace and Leon are celebrating. Grace has finished up the specs for the mini-Dimension Eater (MDE) bomb, and more importantly she has solved the mystery about the Vajra Queen that stumped Mao and Ranshe: yes, Vajra Queen really does taste like chicken, only slightly gamier. With that mystery out of the way, Leon sets Operation Reginleif Bridge into motion, stationing a sniper to give President Glass the JFK treatment. Ozma and Cathy rush to stop Leon, but it looks like they might be too late.

The other storyline follows Ranka losing Ai-kun and chatting with Brera about her motivation for singing. While Brera makes Ranka realize that she is singing just for Alto and not for the fickle crowds, Yasaburo reminds Sheryl that it rocks to be on stage. Mikhail and Klan Klein try to get the love triangle resolved, but when Ranka bursts onto the roof to confess to Alto, she finds Alto and Sheryl standing very close together.

Reaction:

This was a pretty nice setup episode, but I was confused about the Vajra larvae. The new hatchlings looked rather large and were smart enough to scalp some tickets to get into Ranka’s concert (put your feelers in the air, like you just don’t care), but Luca spotted information on Leon’s computer screen that implies that Ai-kun is a Vajra larva. I wonder if Ranka is the key to why Ai-kun is fairly tame and small compared to the other Vajra. Is Ai-kun a baby Queen?

I enjoyed the Klan Klein and Mikhail moments, and Mikhail finally admitted that he is scared that Klan Klein will bite the dust if they do the sideways tango. As for Alto, I bet he wasn’t really making any moves on Sheryl and it was just a misunderstanding. After all, Alto making a huge “♥ Ranka” sky banner was also just a misunderstanding. The worst part was how Alto made a lovu-lovu Ranka sign in order to show off to Sheryl (who reminds Alto of his mom, Miyo).

You’ve missed the most important part of this episode: Ozma and Cathy have made up, and are acting like a cute teenage couple… while the real teenagers aren’t even sure what dating is. :D

Supposedly it was a cover so that Cathy could save her dad from her evil fiance, though… On the other hand, this was infinitely more romantic than Mikhail talking about Alto with Klan Klein.

They say it’s cover, but cover doesn’t usually look that natural or like they’re enjoying it so much that it’s saccharine-sweet. Besides, if her fiance’s trying to off Pop, I suspect she’s willing to ditch Leon ANYWAYS. Especially now that Ozma doesn’t have to always take care of Ranka, which means he can pay more attention to her.

Oh, that and the romance she probably sees in a public confession over channels of his feelings towards her helped her smile this ep. I mean, if a guy says that he wouldn’t be a man if he couldn’t even make the effort to protect the woman he loves… after blocking a ship-killer shot… and then kicking a Vajra’s head in during that confession…

And yes, they were much better than Klan Klein and Mikhail this week. Or the triangle, for that matter – there’s about as much romance there as there was between Bobby and the bridge crew.

Ozma is so gonna save Cathy from another encounter with danger.

They have to be the most natural looking couple of the show for now.

Well, while Ozma saves Cathy, he can die as well :D

Well at the very least Sheryl has learned some important things about Alto-hime. As for the heart thing Alto-hime took a page from Sheryl and did it professionally. At the very least for Sheryl Alto-hime didn’t charge Ranka off stage and catch her for an ad hoc fly by, so Sheryl can console herself with the memory of the first time she felt Alto-hime’s embrace. Come to think of it has Ranka been embraced in such a manner?

Ranka got groped in that first battle, IIRC. Does that count?

Well it’s not the most romantic memory…getting groped and all. Also now that Brera is in the picture it’s unlikely that Ranka can do it again. At least in Sheryl’s case she got to fly again in Alto-hime’s arms.

Unless this is To-Love Ru, then nope, groping doesn’t count.

Groping is like a series of mini-hugs.

I wonder if this show is really 26 episodes as ANN tells us. It feels like there’s a lot more plot to go.

I don’t think anyone has ever been sued for hugging. Groping, yes, but not hugging. I doubt it qualifies as assault. Maybe I just found a legal loophole. I wouldn’t suggest trying this in Japan though because “I’m gonna hug you!” would sound rather ambiguous to Japanese ears.

Talking about JFK, if he was still alive, I think, he’d be ashamed to hear how they treat people at the aiport named after him:
