Anime Dads

Kabitzin on June 15, 2008 · in Random Stuff

Ah, it’s Father’s Day over here, so here are some good and not so good anime dads. I tried to highlight fathers in recent series, because we can’t keep milking Evangelion for inspiration. It’s surprising how few have much of a role in anime series. Most of the time they are just there to either conform to or overcome tradition.

  • Iwamoto Kogan (Shigurui): I think peeing on yourself and manually checking if your daughter is “ripe” typically put you on the bottom of the list, but if not then Kogan had plenty of other shooting star moments.
  • Kuhoin Renjou (Kurenai): It’s sad when incest and pimping your kids to each other don’t earn you the bottom spot. At least he loved his mistress and sister… sorta.
  • Death Scythe (Soul Eater): He’s a caring dad, just not a caring husband.
  • Sekai Kantarou (Shakugan no Shana): I guess someone is paying the bills. He may not be around much, but at least he came back to put another bun in the oven, so that Yuuji wouldn’t be lonely.
  • Kawazoe-sensei (Bamboo Blade): Tamaki’s dad is a little over-protective, but he has Tamaki’s best interests in mind. There’s just a little bit of a disconnect in communications…
  • Hinamori-otousan (Shugo Chara): Overprotective and kinda spastic, Amu’s dad is like Death Scythe but without the blades or the cheating.
  • Kannagi Genma (Kaze no Stigma): He never actually got over his hangup with tradition, but since his son ended up being completely badass and haxxor, we got treated to some tender father-son moments. Plus he saved Kazuma from the guy that tentacled Kazuma’s first GF to death, so that has to count for something.
  • Kasahara-otousan (Toshokan Sensou): Finally a father who can sense the situation and put 1+1 together and get 2. He let Iku do her thing, and knew his wife well enough to trick her into going along.
  • Nakagami-otousan (True Tears): He didn’t force Shinichiro to take over the family business and even let Shinichiro’s sorta GF live with them for a while (in spite of the awkwardness). He also gave that un-named bald kid a real shot and probably stayed faithful to his extremely jealous wife.
  • Midarezaki Oka (Kyouran Kazoku Nikki): Operation Cozy Family is not an easy job, but Oka makes the best of it. He even takes in Suigintou-wannabes regardless of their family history.

Nakagami-otousan was a stand up bloke, I just wished we got some of those seedy details of his past.

The dads in Ranma 1/2 are main characters and important to the overall story!

Lafiel’s dad in Crest of the Stars, not too shabby either.

The dad from Chi’s Sweet Home is more in line with the younger generation dads. Certainly not a salaryman. He has a main role too.

Sekai Kantarou (Shakugan no Shana): …but at least he came back to put another bun in the oven

And he’s awesome, even if we don’t know what his first name is yet.

And my sister actually has a homemade plushie of Chiyo’s dad. Just a reminder of how awesome the character was. :P

What, no Big Papa Ikari? I guess he won’t win any awards…

Love the picture (and Jesus’s link) of the very Dad I got my name from.

I loved Tamaki’s dad, I thought their relationship was really touching, in a Ghost World kind of way.

How about Shion’s dad in Shion no Ou? Aren’t foster dads allowed being featured in your post? ;P

  • Foster dads are allowed, but I have not watched Shion no Ou or Da Capo (any of them).
  • I thought Tamaki’s dad was ok, but are you sure some of you aren’t giving him extra credit for turning her off of Yuuji and onto Rin?
  • I have to admit that I would be creeped out by a real plushie Chiyo chichi in my room…
