Summary:
Sheryl’s got the day off, before she wraps up her farewell concert next week and returns to Macross Galaxy. From Grace’s vision recording (illegal in Frontier), Sheryl has an idea of where she lost the earring, and she wants Alto’s help in finding it. More importantly, she wants to have some fun with Alto, since he treats her like a normal person. By confiscating Alto’s Lucky Charm, Sheryl convinces Alto to take her around San Frontiersisco and to the local Zentradi mall. Sheryl has a great time, and gives Alto a kiss on the cheek (which Ranka sees).
Wouldn’t you know that Ranka and Mikhail are at the mall at the exact same time. Ranka got suspended for taking part in the contest, and she is having a fight with Ozma. Mikhail explains that Ranka is too shy to sing in front of a crowd who didn’t come to see her, but Ranka sees one of Alto’s litter-planes and starts to rock the mall with her song. Unfortunately, the song has an effect on all kinds of unwholesome creatures, from a slimy looking manager-guy to the Vajra “corpse” that Leon is showing Ozma and Cathy. Elsewhere, Lt. Willan barely escapes through a wormhole and radios an SOS, stating that Galaxy has been attacked by a swarm of Vajra.

Sheryl was awesome this episode, but I wonder if she is just teasing Alto because she enjoys his company and attention. I’m not yet convinced that all-natural Sheryl is really that into Alto. In other romantic news, I was somewhat surprised that Ozma and Cathy used to be a couple (and she still pines for the bad boy). You can just tell that Leon is going to betray everyone to that mysterious Mr. Bilrer while cheating on Cathy at the same time. The development also makes me wonder if perhaps Ozma will get off with just a really bad wound, instead of dying.
The production quality dropped quite a bit this episode, but at least it was more of a setup episode than anything else. Another thing that really bothered me was how Alto keeps littering. In an enclosed ship with limited resources, does he really have to turn every piece of paper he sees into a paper airplane? Poor Sheryl had to jot down lyrics on some large underwear, because Alto used up all the paper. Even the “dead” Vajra was so pissed off at the littering that it started rampaging in the tube. The Vajra may be brainless bugs, but at least they aren’t litterbugs!

I wonder how much that underwear cost. Judging from the shoe that was shown, costing as much as a small car…
Then again, Sheryl could probably e-bay it to recuperate the cost, having used it as a muse for her latest song.
What I want to know is how she got the underwear back to the studio to use for lyrics. Did she just send Grace to go fetch it?
I don’t think Sheryl is teasing because she seemed disappointed when Alto-hime said he was going there just to return her earing. All in all coupled with Ranka’s less than stellar attachment to the kabuki princess Sheryl has thrown me unto the fence reagrding the triangle. Leon is an unscrupulous fellow maybe he’s a double agent?
Good to see that Klein and Sheryl are getting along.
I’ve decided to root for Sheryl, even though I am 95% sure that Alto will end up with Ranka, and Sheryl will end up happy but alone. I guess I like the hard-luck self-made girls more than the genki girls.

but you’re way right about the animation. I thought so last week as well, but Michel and Ranka’s conversation on the street was just plain bad. I hope what they’re doing is saving money where it’s ok ,i.e., episodes with no space battles, and they didn’t totally blow their cash already. Way too early to pull a gainax (or is that a gonzo?)
Yeah, hopefully they are just pacing themselves with the budget (fix for DVD special!) so that the really important episodes can rock. Everyone’s faces were skinnier this time, so it was almost like a new animation team was in place. I think the production values were still good, but of course we are all spoiled after the first few episodes.
I’m just comforted knowing that in the future we’ll be able to carry around an 80′s backup band (complete with keytar) for those times you want to sing and there aren’t any session musicians on the corner.
Also, just once, can’t we have the sneaky, duplicitous, backstabbing a-hole (Leon) not look like a sneaky, duplicitous, backstabbing a-hole? Granted if he turns out to be a good guy after all, I will take no responsibility for my lazy assumptions.
The animation was a bit choppier but at least Sheryl was very well animated. The backgrounds are still top notch though.
Well, on the upside we got more of Sheryl, Ranka, and Alto. Even if the art wasn’t as good as it could be, Klein Klan was at least drawn better than her last appearance. She actually has facial features that can be used for glaring.
As far as Ozma goes.. he’s a dead man. His past relationship with Cathy pretty much cements his Focker role, which combined with all his other liabilities makes him a Dead Man Walking. All he needs is to be shown ordering a pineapple salad, and we can consider him done.

He can’t die (unless a Vajra squishes him)!
Ozma is going to die because it will serve as a trigger for Ranka to go cuckoo for cocoa puffs later in the series. And it will prompt Rick..er..Alto to be the hero he’s contractually obligated to become. It doesn’t look like they’re going to stray too far from the beaten path. At least not yet anyway.
Damn, good thing you guys aren’t in charge of setting Ozma’s life insurance rates

I sort of liked the choppy animation… and choppy animation in general. Theres just that cheesy sense to it, and it reminds me of Beck (which is one of my fav animes) It would be nice to have updated animation in the DVDs though

I feel like it will be the other way around: I want Ranka to win, but I think that Alto and Sheryl will match up sadly in the end.
