SS!AB Updated to WP 2.5

by Kabitzin on March 31, 2008 in Site News

Like a Gundam getting the Trans-Am system, the blog has been upgraded to WordPress 2.5 today. So far everything seems to work, and most of the plugin issues were easily resolved. The only bug I’ve seen so far is that the Dashboard link leads to a mostly blank page, but going to /wp-admin/ displays the Dashboard correctly.

As for the UI, it hasn’t changed from RC1 as far as I can tell, and I like it overall. The only thing I don’t like is how the categories are at the bottom now, since there are a lot of categories on this blog, and it takes much longer to scroll to the correct category now.

“Like a Gundam getting the Trans-Am system”

You wish. Besides, wouldn’t that mean your powers would only last for a limited time???

What? You mean you didn’t upgrade within 8 hours of it being released like I did? :D

With the categories – at least if there are come categories you use a lot, there is the “most used category” tab (or link I guess), but I’m not sure how many posts you need in a category for it to be listed there or if it’s just the top 5 categories…

But yeah, maybe next time they need some sort of drag-and-drop type thing for the Create Post page so that you can organize that stuff how one wants.

There is indeed a most used view for the categories, but that just displays the X number of categories that have the most posts throughout the life of the blog.

Convert your categories to tags already! The option’s been there since… 2.3.

I’ve been running it for a day or so now, and the UI really helps a lot. The Visual/WYSIWYG editor doesn’t suck anymore, too, and it’s a welcome change from the usual. What plugins were you using? None of mine broke, and I didn’t have to deactivate anything while upgrading.

It’s too bad that you cannot have tags with the same name as categories, since that would allow me to try out the switch and see which one works better with this site. Still, the tags are on the bottom as well, so that doesn’t really fix my posting problem. Like Josh, I’d like to see some drag and drop functionality to rearrange the posting UI myself.

The update didn’t break any of my plugins, but some of the plugins had new releases because of WP 2.5 and so I had to reconfigure 1 or 2 of them.

I heard the WYSIWYG no longer messes with your code, which would be intriguing if true. I may have to give it another chance.

Ah. Well, you could always take a look at other people’s blogs or something, I guess? For me it’s mostly taking advantage of the Related Posts thing like I wrote about some time back.

The WYSIWYG doesn’t mess with your code unless you try to insert something ridiculously complicated like a Last.fm widget, or any NicoNico inserts — but I’m suspecting the code used is to blame. Those are irritating, though, considering how good the WSYSIWYG is right now.

I just tried the automatic plugin upgrade function for the Simple Tags plugin, and it went off without a hitch!

I’m quite impressed with the upgrades. There’s no real change to the ‘front end’ of the blog but I’ve really found the fullscreen mode of the WYSIWYG editor and the automatic ‘one-click’ plugin updates helpful. Can’t say I’m too keen on the categories and tags being shifted down either, but the orange-ness of the dashboard was my biggest disappointment (what’s wrong with plain ol’ blues and greys?).

I noticed 2.5 seems to have full text feed built in too, which has made my shockingly long plugin list slightly shorter. Given the tag management I’m tempted to drop Simple Tags too, but I like the formatting that plugin does with the tag cloud more than the default’s way of displaying them.

You can change the color scheme in the options, I believe.

Thanks for your post. It really gave me the impetus to fix the problems I was having with the LMB quicktags plugin.
