What Does Your Gravatar Say About You?

by Kabitzin on March 28, 2008 in Random Stuff

I always have fun looking at people’s Gravatars, especially ever since Automattic bought up Gravatar and scaled it so that it wouldn’t suck anymore. I’ve been noticing more of them recently, and I wondered if any readers would share with me:

What made you pick your Gravatar?

I’ve been using the mobile student Osaka one for a while now, since it was the banner for so long and came to be associated with SS!AB. I’ve always wondered what Ender or Kungfucius would choose, but they have never signed up for one so the mystery continues.

If you’re interested in getting a gravatar, it’s pretty simple to sign up. All you really do is put in your email address and a password. After that, you can upload a picture (and if you don’t have anything like Photoshop, you can use online tools). Once you have an account, every time you use the associated email address to leave a comment on a blog, your gravatar will appear next to your comment (assuming gravatars are enabled). With the close bond now with Gravatar and WordPress (even a built in function in WP 2.5), I can see more and more websites enably Gravatars.

For my own blog I use Etna from the Disgaea games. I set the default gravatar image on my site to be Prinnies (penguin type critters that Etna bosses around). I’ve been using Etna as my default avatar character for years.

Outside my blog I go with Ed from Cowboy Bebop. Cute, but not too cute. Plus, I feel like Ed sometimes, a bit clueless, but happy to be doing whatever I’m doing.

I could say something silly like mine reflects the apathy of mankind, but it’s a picture from one of them Touhou doujins. In this case, the is thinking about something, but she’s not one to spend a lot of time mired in thought. Yay Sakuya.

I’m tempted to change it to something that I think suits me better. Or so I hope. :P

I just use a picture of myself. Gravatar allows only one free picture, so it has to be content-neutral, and not specific to anime. It’s the same picture I use everywhere: at forums, SNS, etc.

I like long walks on the beach and sentimental talks throughout the night

I actually run around with two gravatars because of the inconsistency of my emails and stuff….

One is Ren from DearS because love power conquers all, the other is a silly vectored over self portrait.

I chose my Gravatar because Itsuko and Kyon-ko are awesome. Uhh… that’s about it.

Because it’s a slightly subtler version of slowpoke.jpg and is therefore ‘relevant to my methodology’, and because it’s from a favourite anime.

Its like you always read my mind O_O! (“I’m too embarrassed lazy to ask how to put those icons next to my name, so I’ll just wait til Kabi-kun writes an entry about it!”) =3

I’ve always been alittle hesitant to get a Gravatar, since it seems like only people with links/websites/blogs should use them. Maybe I’m too shy to sit at the cool kids table *blush*

I wish there was a way to see a full size version of the pics though, like, for instance (not to put you on the spot) but I can’t tell what the hell IKnight’s pic is. All I see is a Pacman-like-thing trying to munch on a backwards “E”. Slowpoke FTW BTW!

I guess I figure people will see Mesousa and take pity on me. although sometimes gravatar thinks it should be the penguin maid, so I’m guessing the technology still isn’t perfect.

The default on my own blog is Chiyo-chan’s “dad” from Sasaki’s dream in Azumanga, because he deflects bullets!

I use John Oates with another email address though… not sure what that’s about honestly.

This was a random (but well-drawn) picture I got off 4chan one day. Source unknown, but the “さ” amused me so much I kept it. It must have been my destiny.

In case you’re wondering how it fits in, it’s the サ in サーターナイン, or something. See also accusations of Nazi-ism in the ABC. I’ve since turned it into a brand, what with the favicon, ANano blog icon, and other stuff. I call it “satler”, after “saturnine” + “Hitler”.

I chose a Giroro drawn by my kawaii musume and I’ll take advantage of this post to see if it works.

Tsukasa from Lucky Star, looking somewhat apprehensive. This is more or less my default mood.

Truth to tell, I used it because I was stuck for something else to use. I suppose it works as well as any.

Konata from Lucky Star as well. It is because it fits to my blog’s theme >.>”

Cause the Tsukihime manga rocked. There was no anime…

At times I switch to a manga Kazuki from Busou Renkin. Maybe I am just a manga whore.

My grav is that of the Communicator from Haibane Renmei – it’s connected to my blog name in a cryptic, roundabout way that I often apply to my blogging because it makes me feel clever and smug. ^_^ Besides, a character who’s individual yet faceless and anonymous seemed fitting for an online persona…

Speaking of this, I just added Gravatars to my comments now that I’ve upgraded to 2.5 today. I had a gravatar account already, apparently, and didn’t know about it lol.

In any case, my gravatar, which I just did tonight as well, is just a picture of Rakka from Haibane Renmei since she’s in my blog’s header file.

I’m not sure that using LOL Fang Sensei for a Gavitar says anything more about me that using Fat Nakago for a handle. Or maybe it says it all….

Oh dear. I never really thought of it that way. I just made something that I thought was cool.

I guess it says I’m a Geek! ^_^

1) I use firefox
2) I watch anime
3) I used photoshop to customise it.

It doesn’t get worse!

Now that I have reached Level 159 in comments, I guess it was a good time to get a gravatar! *wears cologne* *gels hair* *picks up glasses with finger* Hey guys! I’m ready to join the cool kids table now! *everyone leaves cool kids table* :(

errr, so yea, It wasn’t easy picking out a gravatar. I had to choose either a character thats more in tune with my RL persona (shy types, ex: Sora from Sketchbook full colorS) or a crazy mo-fo on crack character… plus, I needed a head shot of said anime character, or else it would be too hard for anyone to tell who the character was. I decided to go with my more gangsta thug life personality.

I first wanted Al Capone from Soul Eater (I believe it was episode 2), but he wasn’t a main villain and died way too easily… He also looked alot like Wario (which happens to be my 2nd Espada main in Super Smash Bros. Brawl… who might be replaced by Luigi soon), so that was a plus. Since I couldn’t use him, I checked my hardrive for more gangsta like characters, and I came Macross Yotsuba with her Mafia outfit! IT WAS PERFECT!!!

I thought Yotsuba would fit myself pretty well, because just like her, I’m still learning more about life. Theres a hell of alot of things I need to learn, and hopefully, as I continue, I can do it with a smile, just like Yotsuba =3… and like, SHES IN GANGSTA CLOTHING!!! So RL/Gangsta persona CHECKED!!!
