Spice and Wolf 02

Kabitzin on January 17, 2008 · in Spice and Wolf 1

Due to the pouring rain, Horo and Lawrence stay at an Abbey as husband and wife (with facial burns, supposedly). Horo can hang around as long as the wheat that Lawrence has is not destroyed, so Lawrence threshes it and puts it in a nice necklace pouch for her. Horo also reveals that she is great at differentiating between lies and truth; this comes in handy when young Zeiren tells Lawrence of a scheme to get rich off some new silver coins that will be circulated soon (with a higher silver content).

Lawrence goes along with the plan, even though he can tell that something is fishy. Horo is kinda wistful about all the changes that have occurred, but Lawrence reminds her that because she hasn’t changed, Yoitsu probably hasn’t either. They then have some trash talking, but nerves are touched as Horo reveals she’s eaten humans (out of fear), and Lawrence reveals that he’s had bad encounters with wolves 8 times.

Not very much happened this episode, but we definitely got to know Lawrence and Horo better. There were a lot of funny moments, like when Horo told Lawrence that whiskers would look very handsome and when Lawrence’s explanation of his amazing bartering exploits put the vineyard owner’s wife to sleep. It amuses me that Horo is actually very old (and furry), even though she looks young; it’s like Tsunade without the chest.

I also liked that both Lawrence and Horo seem evenly matched in terms of wit. I liked their bantering, and they seem to care enough about each other to avoid getting too nasty with the insults. Of course Lawrence will have to remain strong in the face of Horo’s temptations. She has yet to pay for the clothing, pouch, hotel bill, or food!
