The Circle-Jerk of SaiGar and SaiMoe

by Kabitzin on January 14, 2008 in This Week I Enjoyed

From Furu Anime Panikku:

This brainless e-fapping, as I would call it, is a total waste of time. I don’t see anything to benefit from when the character whom you support is crowned victorious. There’s not even the slightest form of intellectual discussion, or even humor, but mere mindless clicking and recruiting of more people to join in the e-fap contest.

Gaining some measure of public mandate can be useful in giving your discussions a bit more clout. This way the next time you tell your buddies that you thought Shinji Ikari was super manly, instead of saying, “Lolwhut? Didn’t he fap on a comatose chick?” they will say, “You are right, because hundreds of otaku can’t be wrong!”

The closest I’ve ever gotten to these silly contests was laughing about it on Kurogane’s blog.

They’re really just glorified population contests, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t fun or entertaining. You have to do in a way that encourages people being civil and creative instead of people just shouting at each other. It can be done. :P

But the actual fact is, Shinji sucks and is evil. Kaworu’s the real man.

We’ve got a ton of circlejerkers in our neck of the woods, so don’t be the pot that called the kettle black.

Also Kaworu is so manly I’d want to have his manbabies if I wasn’t gay for Johnny Depp :P

This brainless anime blogging, as I would call it, is a total waste of time. I don’t see anything to benefit from when the anime which you watch is crowned “Anime of the Year”. There’s not even the slightest form of intellectual discussion, or even humor, but mere mindless anime blogging and inducing of more comments to join in the e-penis contest.

It’s still fun =( I don’t participate in SaiGar, but SaiMoe was win because it was interesting to see who otakus thought were most moe. I dunno, just another event for people to discuss and debate and argue over.

Do they have SaiGar/SaiMoe betting brackets, like in the NCAA Basketball Tournament? Being able to win money on the competition would really spice it up.

Since I was actually hanging around /a/ when the SaiGar tourney took form I haven’t been able to look at it as anything other than a full-on parody of all the stuff that turns SaiMoe from a friendly polling competition into a xenophobic Japanese Otaku circle-jerk.

I mean, Quality Cabbage not only was in the first one, but I think it even managed to win a round. I admit I haven’t paid any attention to SaiGar lately, though. Has it become Serious Business?

SaiGar and SaiMoe have a lot in common with spectator sports like football and basketball. I wonder if Double maintains the same mindset regarding those as well.
