Hitohira 04-06

As practice ramps up, Mugi considers quiting, and tries to escape several times. Unfortunately, Nono is quite the taskmaster, and takes on a scary appearance when she wants to make a point. Nono goes on to wager the club funds on everyone in DRS getting in the top 30 during the midterms. Risaki believes that the mantra that effort yields results is a lie, and works with Kai to steal the results sheet. Although we don’t learn if everyone made it in the top 30, all the time spent studying was also great training in diction. However, it seems that Nono’s vocal cords are getting worse.

With that out of the way, it’s time for hardcore training at the beach. Chitose is jealous that the DRS gets to practice at the beach, but Nono is a taskmaster and rides everyone hard. The DC is going to put on 9th Day Witch, and DRS will put on Nono’s play, Hitohira. Hitohira is about a pessimistic girl who is able to get with some guy with the help of three annoying fairies. Mugi is to play the lead, but Nono is so critical of her that Mugi runs out depressed. Risaki can’t believe how bitchy Nono is being and the two engage in a spectacular catfight. Although Risaki possesses a reach advantage and lands several stiff shots to Nono’s face, Nono scores a sweep and catches Risaki on the chin with a knee, resulting in a double knockout.

The next day, Nono thinks about why she created the DRS, and remembers about how she used to suck before Mirei helped her. At the same time, Mugi realizes that Nono had to work pretty hard to get to where she is, and Mugi decides to give it another shot. This somehow results in some hot tub fanservice followed by Mugi washing Nono’s back as an apology, and Risaki trying to wash Mugi’s back for no reason at all. When they return, Kayo notices that Mugi is much livelier, and Mugi fibs to Chitose that Takashi thinks Chitose is cute.

These three episodes were pretty good, and hopefully we are past worrying about Mugi running away every 5 minutes. I think they did a great job with the beach episodes, and it actually made sense that the DRS would go there to get away from the crowds and give Mugi a chance to build her confidence. I am surprised we didn’t really see anyone in their swimsuits, although there was a bit of fanservice in episode 6.

Nono was merciless during the beach episodes, but she really does care about the club. It’s good that Risaki warned Nono about projecting onto Mugi, and it looks like Nono is now content to simply treat Mugi as her rebound girl. The love storm clouds are starting to gather with Kai blushing about holding Mugi’s hand, Mugi blushing about getting all over Nono, Nono wishing she could get back together with Mirei, Chitose mistakenly thinking she has a chance with Takashi, and Takashi wishing he could overcome Nono’s yuri shield.

I think this series is really hitting its groove now, and I’m glad that Mugi has stopped her whining. Less QQ and more A-E-I-O-U!!! The only thing that would have made this stretch better is if Nono had donned some sunglasses and given the speech that Kamina always gave to Simon. Also, how did that script survive being swept out into the ocean?
