Venturing Past the Fog of Blog

by Kabitzin on June 29, 2007 in Interviews,Site News

I was reading and nodding along with some 9rules dorama today and I saw some interesting ideas that were posited by AJ.

All that drama aside, I really liked the idea about the mini-interviews/behind the scenes articles. I feel like the anime community has a lot of colorful characters who could be the subject of some really great interviews. I’m thinking of those short little interviews where you get a few of the standard “Why do you do what you do?” questions mixed in with some off-the-wall queries.

How would this all work? Well to avoid simply running out of material or making the feature become too much work, it’d probably have to be a monthly feature or something. And since many bloggers obviously like text as a medium, I imagine that some type of text chat would be a great way to conduct an interview. Then with a little bit of editing and some presto-chango, you could have a nice little feature that spotlights the interviewee and gives the reader some insight into what a labor of love blogging can be.

Of course, like any idea with shounen power-up ability, this one requires hard work and training. There would be the difficulty in coordinating schedules to arrange an interview. I wonder if email exchange would even have to be used for well-thought out responses and ease of logging. And then of course the interviewer would have to actually research the subject’s site (ahhh, subject likes to post fanservicey pictures of Yoko; this is relevant to my interests…) to come up with meaningful and unique questions. Otherwise, it would just be like a reposting of the subject’s About page.

Anyways, I’m just tossing ideas out there. I think it’s an idea with some definite upside potential and freakish wingspan. I remember one of the things I enjoyed most about the Anime Nano Podcast was the feeling like I knew the hosts, even though I have never actually met any of them. It’s that sort of community feeling that always makes the comments on posts so fun to read and respond to.

I’m putting up this post in case anyone has any feedback or ideas they’d like to share. What kind of stuff would you want to know about the person whose blog you read? I’m not completely sure of the mechanics yet, but I want to be able to refer to this post to prove I’m not stalking the person I’m trying to interview (even if I really am stalking them, bwahahaha).

Edit: We have our first victim subject! Ender and I are drafting up some questions, so look forward to the first interview in the near future. We’re hoping to get some real insightful responses, and we will not accept the following cliche answers:

  • Well, you know, I just try to take it one episode at a time, and not look too far ahead.
  • When I’m writing a post, I just gotta stay aggressive and let the paragraph come to me without forcing it.
  • I was all alone so I just stepped up and knocked down the open screenshot.
  • I’ve gone several weeks without updating, and my back’s up against the wall. Yeah, I’d say that this is a must-post situation.

The “cliche” answers were great. None of them would occur to me… The one about the screenshot made no sense (what does “knock down” mean in this context? I know what happens if you knock down a soccer player or knock up your girlfriend, but screenshot…?), but it seemed funny nonetheless.

Good luck with your project.

Since you “knock down” shots in basketball, I suppose you could also knock down screen’shots’ as well.
