Clare tries to be all tricky, and first uses her Yoki-sensing to defend. It’s not quite enough, however, to defend against Ophelia’s “Rippling Sword” (more like “Vibrator Sword” amirite?), and even the stupid should pads don’t help. Clare’s next trick is to get cut in the chest and lose an arm before falling into a river. Having studied a lot of anime series, Clare figures the fall will not kill her, and that Ophelia will just give up. Unfortunately, the moment Clare tries so hard to save her severed arm, Ophelia knows it is a trick.

Ophelia then tracks down Clare and chops the right arm to pieces, before cutting off Clare’s left hand. Clare is an offensive-type Claymore (because she wanted to kill more than protect when she became a Claymore), and thus cannot regenerate the way a defensive-type like Deneve can. It looks bad for Clare, but at the last second, Irene shows up and lays the smackdown on Ophelia. Irene recognizes that Teresa’s blood is in Clare, and marvels at Clare’s decision to move forward, especially since Irene has retreated and hidden for 4 years. While Clare learns how to use Irene’s Flash Sword, Ophelia is angry about her brother’s death and Awakens.

This was another fantastic episode, with Clare trying to use her mad planning skills to be like Miria. Unfortunately, her plan had some flaws, but at least she was able to save the left hand. Because the Flash Sword involves actually Awakening one arm and using strong willpower to control the arm, it is perfectly suited for Clare. It’s too bad that Irene is taking a huge risk to teach it to Clare, since it undoubtedly has a large Yoki signature. I guess Irene is not worried about running away anymore. Too bad no explanation is given about how Irene survived Priscilla’s Awakening.

Speaking of Irene, how about that elf ear on elf ear violence? I like how Ophelia’s “special move” works just the way that wiggling a pencil to make it look like it is made out of rubber works. Even one-handed Irene was more than enough to beat up Ophelia, and now Ophelia is trying to pull a Priscilla. Having already lost one arm, however, Irene was smart enough to leave before the Awakening. You can tell Irene is very smart from the way she hid Clare’s sword in a pile of wood.

Those shoulder pads are like Stormtrooper armor. I also wonder why Claymore boots have heels. Maybe they are fashion-conscious?

Irene survived ’cause she’s in the opening.

But seriously, she’s the only one who had her head intact and attached to her body. She did collapse and just take the hit, maybe she wasn’t despairing, but planning like Clare?

I was kinda waiting for this. I can’t say I knew she’d come back, but I figured from the opening thing that she at least was put inside another Claymore like with Teresa and Clare.

excellent episode

screamed like a school girl on a roller coaster when Irene was reintroduced. She was nothing in the presence of the great Teresa but she sure is a badass now (one armed and all)

It wouldn’t be believable if any of the Claymore girls suddenly powered up and donned an evening gown of invincibility. There’d be no suspense then!

The title of this episode should have been “What is the sound of one hand clapping?”
