Summer 2007

Next season looks to be an interesting one, between all the anticipated sequels and series based off popular source material. I’m looking forward to adding some lovu lovu to my anime diet, as the Spring season was great, but very shounen (for me). As usual, I almost always base my initial reactions on the series art.

Rather than reinvent the wheel and link all the series, I’m just going to list a few quick thoughts on what caught my eye in the Summer lineup. Omni always does such an outstanding job of amassing accurate plot summaries and relevant links that I have to link to his Summer 2007 preview.

Can’t Wait to Watch It!

  • School Days: I am back to the point where I could go for an H-game conversion. The possibility of sweet Ayu-Mayu nail-bat type violence (like in the otherwise horrific Akane Maniax) makes me drool in anticipation.
  • Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei: The art looks good, and maybe it will have a nice mix of drama and comedy.
  • Nanatsuiro Drops: I like the art, and I am reminded of the good ole days of Mahou Shoujo Nanoha. However, I am not expecting great things from the story.
  • Zero no Tsukaima ~Futatsuki no Kishi~: I will definitely watch the sequel since I watched the first season, but I’m not going in with unrealistic expectations. I figure it will be more cliche stuff again, but the original had good execution and entertainment value. Hopefully Kirche won’t get too much of her screen time cut.
  • Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan 2: The first season was uneven, but the great art and OMGWTF moments give the sequel some Tremendous Upside Potential.

Hmmmm…

  • Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai: I didn’t watch the first one, and I don’t like the art style or premise. Still, the series has generated a lot of buzz so maybe I will watch a few episodes.
  • Baccano!: While the 1930′s don’t interest me at all (even with gun-slinging nuns and demon sidekicks), the art looks slick and there is the promise of alchemy.
  • Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucho Tou Dai Ni Maku: I watched a little of the first series, and it was ok. I might watch any episodes that have particularly strong fight scenes. Those weird tattoo-marks they get remind me of that Comcast commercial where the guy is like, “Sorry Roger, you tiger now.”
  • Mushi-Uta: Looks like typical shounen fare.
  • CODE-E: This reminds me of the lesbian girl in Sousei no Aquarion who would orgasm and explode whenever she got emotional. I don’t consider that a strong premise, but your mileage may vary.
  • Zombie-Loan: I’m a little unsure about the artwork, and I am reminded of Yu Yu Hakusho.
  • Doujin Work: If it’s funny, I’ll watch it, but I’m unlikely to blog the series. The chatter about doujinshi might be informative, though.

That Sounds Terrible!

  • Buzzer Beater (2007): The art quality wasn’t that bad in the first version, so I don’t understand what the point of this remake is. I’ll probably watch it in hopes of more trippy Gyuma footage, but I give the series a 95% chance of sucking.
  • Mononoke: The premise sounds ok, but I am completely turned off by the idea of watching an animated version of that classic Final Fantasy artwork.
  • Sky Girls: The OVA did not even live up to my low expectations, although I’m sure the art will look great. Sometimes art is not enough, I guess.
  • Potemayo: Unless this turns into a better-looking Pugyuru, there is pretty much no chance I will watch this.
  • Moetan: This seems like the sort of schtick that would get old as fast as Lucky Channel, but it might be good for a few chuckles.
  • Shigurui: I will stick with Seirei no Moribito for my period piece needs. I’ll stick with Claymore for my guts needs. But thanks for asking.
  • Kenko Zenrakei Suieibu Umisho: Sounds like too much ecchi stupidity and not enough dorama.
  • Tetsuko no Tabi: There is pretty much zero no tsukaima chance that I will watch a show this fugly. Also, the plot sounds boring.

Hey, I saw some pretty good looking CG rails in the PV. :(

In which case, you’re probably better off not watching. At least until you watch S1. Otherwise, you’re going to be pretty lost when it comes to S2.

Potemayo is adorable!! Read the manga and I loved it! ^-^
The cute little creature Potemayo (whose name is from Potato Mayonnaise LOL) is like a mix of Sugar (Tiny Snow Fairy) when it comes to sweetness, and Mirumo when it comes to her mischievousness XD

Some aspects of it reminds of of Lucky Star for some reason… and the protagonist is like the male version of Hotaru or Haruhi in terms of coolness (but a little bit more nicer and sweeter^^)

It’s one of the shows I’m really looking forward to this summer :p

It’s gonna be tough to figure out which series to watch and blog! The thing is, I kinda feel obligated to cover Zero no Tsukaima 2 and Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan 2 since I did the first season/OVA for both. ZeroMa2 should be a short season, but I have not yet seen definitively how many episodes the Dokuro-chan series will span. If it’s also a shortened season, I may pick up two additional series to cover.

From what I’ve heard of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, it sounds like a nightmare to fansub, so I probably won’t end up watching it. I have a feeling I will cover School Days and another series, and keep Nanatsuiro Drops as a guilty pleasure that I don’t talk about as often. Naturally this depends on what Ender and possibly Kungfucius would like to post about.

I don’t feel the same loyalty towards blogging Buzzer Beater. It sounds like I am one of the few people who actually finished the first series, and it’s probably better that way.
