Wait What Did I Type?

by Kabitzin on April 13, 2007 in Site News

I know it’s happened to you. You’re on your favorite anime blog (i.e. this one) and you start typing a comment. However, you’re distracted and instead of typing this:

OMG I love Futakoi Alternative so much! I also love kittens!

you hit a few keys by accident and it comes out like this:

OMG I love Divergence Eve so much! I also love yaoi pr0n featuring kottens!

You don’t want other people to think you don’t know how to spell “kittens” and so all you can do is leave a second comment with a simple “*kittens” and hope nobody thinks any less of you. Trust me, it’s happened to the best of us.

Well, I’ve gone through the site and upgraded to the latest iteration of WordPress, version 2.1.3, and I’ve updated most of the plugins running on the site. One of the newest additions is called WP AJAX Edit Comments:

If you are a user, leave a comment. You may edit for a specified amount of time. If your comment is in moderation and you decide to edit, your comment will disappear from the page on the next refresh. Make sure you do all of your editing before you refresh the page.

As it’s set up now, you get a generous 15 minutes to edit your comment. Hopefully this will work and save everyone from embarrassment on the web. Let me know if you see any upgrade wonkiness as well.

Edit: Temporarily disabled. Doesn’t seem to work =\.

Edit 2: v1.1.0.1 Might actually work… Experimenting now…

Are you getting that crimson Spam Karma warning too?

Double edged sword, preventing embarrassment but also missing out on some humour as well? ;)

Sounds like a nifty idea though.

Ack you caught me in the middle of an update Pete, so I had not yet edited the settings. Hopefully it has gone away.

Sorry for the double comments, but it seems to not work exactly… =/

I was just noticing this as well… the comment never seems to load, grrrrr.

So far a few issues with the latest update:

  • Seems that the comment editing plugin may have problems with other Ajax type comments. I’m about to attempt to update SS!AB’s K2 install, and I’ll see how it goes from there. In the meantime, it will be fun to see if anyone posts anything really odd in hopes of editing it =D.
  • Latest User Online plugin actually references a page called useronline, so I might to have to actually make such a page. Gonna have to see how I can have it not listed at the top with the rest of the pages, since I don’t see a point in having it linked twice, and by default my navigation lists all pages.

I think an edit plugin should automatically be added to future versions of Wordpress because it really *is* kind of embarrassing having a typo plastered across the screen for all to see due to the inability to re-edit comments. That’s why I have both an edit *and* preview plugin installed. It really helps, although I don’t really get enough comments to warrant having those nifty plugins, but still…

I’m not creative enough to leave an odd comment, but if I can edit this I’ll remove this line…

Maya, I agree that it would be nice if WP had a built in toggle-able option on comments to allow users to edit their own comments for X amount of time. Just seems so simple, and effective.

Which is probably why it hasn’t been implemented yet =D.

I don’t really have any use for this. My comments are usually deleted within 15 seconds anyway almost everywhere. I kind of wondered whether your site is actually dysfunctional because of this.

Urg, just noticed this portion in the code had to be fixed to correctly render the K2 css in IE:

* html #page { width: 900px } /* IE hack */

Jeez…

On a separate note, normal live commenting with Ajax seems to be buggy… wonder if that is why the plugin won’t work.

Looks like a nice little Wordpress plugin. I’m gonna give it a try.
