I know there isn’t a ton of evidence to support this, but I’ve felt like October was the month of the trap. What with Lia/D’Eon, Mizuho, etc. one never knows when a phallus could just spring out. Trick or treat! Yeah… Anyway, I’ve been having a hard time keeping up with the new series, and I’m not sure I’ve found any clear winners yet. In fact, if anything, most of the series this season seem lovable but rather flawed. Here’s 5 from this season that have caught my eye so far.
Top Five This Month:
- CODE Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion: Is it really bad? Is it really good? Somehow the amazing production values and mind-blowingly cliche elements have melded together to form a series that begs to be mocked. Please let Suzaku be rather stupid so that Lelouch can go all Darth Helmet on him. I really hope the battles will be evenly matched (like Legends of the Galactic Heroes), but I expect that Suzaku will haxxor so badly that no army of grunts will ever be able to touch him.
- Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru: The production values aren’t that high, the plot is absolutely retarded, but the SD is great and somehow the comedy works. The mystery of what Mizuho’s fake boobs are made of is still unsolved, as is the mystery of how Mizuho has such mad hops that he can easily dunk the ball with one hand.
- Ayakashi Ayashi: I sense strong potential in this series, but it does take a lot of brain power to keep up with all that’s going on. Perhaps if I knew more about traditional Japanese mythology it’d be easier, but the animation is top-notch and the tension is high.
- Chevalier: Everything about that dog fighting episode was cool, from the awesome swordplay to the orgasmic mind control to the inability of Robin to headshot a moving target.
- Hataraki Man: On the one hand those lips really bother me. On the other hand, this show has some engaging drama and also sorta blurs that divide between men and women (the theme for this month!).
Rising:
- Desire to watch Kaleido Star Good da yo! Goood!: Plot summary makes it sound dumb, but it’s Kaleido Star and that title is amazing.
Falling:
- Desire to watch series I read the manga of: I have no desire to watch Death Note, Busou Renkin, Negima?!, or D. Grayman. Death Note’s first arc is really good, but it quickly devolves into reading a ton of extremely wordy text bubbles. I love Kenshin so much, and even read that crappy Gun Blaze West, but I already know that Busou Renkin is an extremely mediocre shounen series. The same goes for D. Grayman, although in many cases the anime looks better than the manga. As for Negima?!, I’ve already been burned badly once with this series, and if the artists can’t capture the sublime art of the manga then it’s just like watching those boring Oh Great! anime series.

Extra trap evidence : Yuyama Kakunojou of Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohahihanhite.
I’m currently following:
- Pumpkin Scissors
- Busou Renkin
- Asatte no Houkou
- Death Note
- Kanon 2006
- Tokimeki
- Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge
- Sumomo mo momomo
- La Corda d’oro
I have to say that most of them are pure crap, there are some nice moments in some, but overall…the situation looks grim. Probably the best ones are Asatte no Houkou and Pumpkin Scissors, and maybe Death note, imo. The rest is very very craptastic, but Sumomo and YNSH sometimes pull out a good laugh or two. Still I don’t know why I’m watching Tokimeki and Kanon. La Corda d’oro is SO shoujio that I feel hardo-gay when I watch it. But I like the setting.
Busou Renkin … I watch it simply pretending I’m not doing it.
(Suzuka, where are you? I miss you sooo much…..)

Code Geass looks very Gundam SEEDish so far. But much like Gundam SEED, I just can’t stop watching it. I don’t know how you brought in Legend of the Galactic Heroes though because LOGH is in a completely different league of goodness
Have you actually watched “Kaleido Star Good da yo! Goood!”? It’s rather a franchise product because it uses chibi style characters. That wouldn’t be bad because it is somewhat cute if and only if they hadn’t used crappy computer aided animation.
