Utawarerumono 23

Dii starts talking a lot this episode, and it’s clear that he is very powerful and mysterious. Genjimaru can’t follow Dii’s shunpo, and decides to take Sakuya and defect over to the side where all the hot babes are. Genjimaru even shows Kurou how real men fight, as the Evinkuruga takes out two Avu Kamuu scrubs. Hakuoro decides to trust Genjimaru, and they easily bust Oruyankuru out of his Sahara prison.

Meanwhile, Hakouro has some crazy visions about a short-haired version of himself, named Iceman. Iceman’s in a modern laboratory, and speaking with a hologram of Dr. Mizushima. Naturally there is an artificial being, known as 3510. 3510 looks vaguely like Eruru, and Mizushima asks Iceman to give her a name. Iceman decides on Mikoto. Back in the present, Hakuoro and Eruru decide they have it pretty good together and start spouting off subtle lovey talk to each other. Too bad by next episode, he’ll probably be referring to her as sisterly or motherly again.

While the flashbacks were nice, this was a rather boring episode. The whole thing with Oruyankuru was so stupid. Hakuoro sends his entire army (and only 1/4 of his forces can still fight) in, risking a potential trap. Then it turns out that he didn’t even need Oruyankuru, because now Urutorii is head priestess! It just ended up being a whole lot of walking for nothing. This is the sort of thing that happens when you space out during important meetings!

Then the whole Eruru-Hakuoro relationship continues to kinda spin its wheels. It takes Yuzuha to finally just say, “Eruru, I may be blind, but even I know Hakuoro’s got a hot body, so go warm up your damn icy hands already.” No doubt Eruru will play a vital role in the final battle, and they focused a lot of time on her strange hair circle ornament thing. I thought it was hilarious how Urutorii has already spoiled herself for the ending of the series, but refused to give up the secrets to Eruru.

I found the whole Hakuoro flashback thing is kinda confusing seeing as we don’t really know what time period it’s in(past? future? alternate universe?). At first i thought alternate universe, but now I lean towards the past. Dunno..

His flashbacks are from the past. Future flashbacks in the later episodes will clarify on this point.

Yeah, but when we first start seeing them, they’re damn confusing.

Well it should be! Hakuoro is recalling his memories in bits and pieces. Mental recovery is seldom a straight route from point A to point B.

Yeah, I think he’s getting it back a little at a time, which is why it seems like certain pieces are out of order.
