Kabitzin’s September 2006 List

by Kabitzin on September 28, 2006 in Progress Sheets

I can’t believe that September’s almost come and gone! I’m gradually slogging through my backlog, and I really hope to pick up more series to blog in the Fall season. Although I watched quite a few, the only series I blogged about was Zero no Tsukaima. I’m looking forward to several strong endings from a number of series, and no doubt there will be a void to fill once they end.

There have been several very interesting manga releases as well. In Suzuka, it looks like we’ll get another head-to-head matchup, and there was even an unexpected scene with Miki. Anyone who has been checking out the Utawarerumono short bits had to love the Hakuoro mask sale… I always wondered why people in the Gundam world didn’t do things like this. Meanwhile, I can’t wait to see how Asuma fares in the latest Naruto battle, especially with Shikimaru providing tactical advice. Unfortunately, not every series has been performing well. In Mahou Sensei Negima, we continue to have the scrub students battling while Negi sleeps (strip beam also returns… ugh, so stupid). And in Bleach, I don’t know how much more Ishida and Chad trash talk I can stomach. I mean, who are they kidding???

Top Five This Month:

  1. Utawarerumono: I’m not minding the twist as much as I thought I would. I think the first few episodes hinted enough at Hakuoro’s origins that I can almost accept it, even if Hakuoro’s transformations (and hallucinations about transforming) always make me giggle. Now I can’t wait to see how the final DBZ encounter plays out.
  2. Ouran Host Club: Is anyone surprised at all the tortured and angsty backstories of the male hosts? The way things have been rolling along, I really don’t expect Haruhi to choose any of the hosts. I could see her just going off, becoming a lawyer and meeting some other guy. Haruhi probably wouldn’t even think twice about it, and there would be no romantic angst at all on her part.
  3. Chevalier: The latest two episodes brought well-choreographed fencing and demonic jutsu into the mix! I also love the awkward feeling I get whenever D’Eon gets possessed by Lia. PSALMS!!!
  4. Honey & Clover II: I actually thought the whole Hagu ordeal was done well, and she was admirable through her struggle. However, something about the Morita-Takemoto love rivalry really bothers me. I guess I always did prefer the Rika-Ayu-Mayama half of the story.
  5. Zero no Tsukaima: Love-sick Louise was soooo annoying that I worry about what will happen if she admits her feelings for Saito. I don’t really understand why Saito would pick Louise over Siesta, though.

Rising:

  • School Rumble: I feel like this series could just go on forever, as long as the Karasuma-Tenma parts are kept to a minimum…

Falling:

  • Naruto: Why are we still getting crappy fillers?

I wonder why no other groups picked up Chevalier because that show is super sweet and it was neglected for quite some time. Here’s hoping for more frequent releases now that they’re past the first episode!

Well, if it helps, the recently completed arc of Naruto( 0197-0201) was pretty decent and actually managed to respark the feeling I wanted to have when watching Naruto. It also helped that it was a mystery arc with no villian-of-the-week premise. It also returned to the darker aspects of the Naruto world. Something that was has been sorely lacking. The ending was also pretty bittersweet and emotional, with the audience sympathising with the antagonist.

To put it one way. It did not feel as though it was a filler.

Cheers.

Nice top 5. I really should have picked up Honey and Clover II but i never saw the first one because it was before i expanded my anime horizens. I have it burned but can’t bring myself to watch it.

My top 5 that ended this season:

1. Ouran High School Host Club
2. School Rumble
3. Blood
4. Utawarerumono
5. Air Gear (omg? yeah i liked it for some reason…)

And yes, Naruto died a long ass time ago. ~67 episodes ago. I heard they’re going to start over from ep. 1 soon. At that point I’ll give up on it.

Haruhi would make a good lawyer imo. She can tell the twins apart, see through Kyouya’s mask, and pretty much takes everything with a grain of salt. I loved this series.

chevalier is weirdly a fav. of mine atm. for some info on the real D’eon…and forewarning..he was much weirder than what we’ve seen so far, and it might be giving away some of the storyline to come..once again, japanese writers have shown me they actually know how to do research in history to mine interesting people to use for animes >

grr it dropped the rest of my post, anyhow, wiki has some info on D’eon that will scare you and fascinate you (the real guy historically) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevalier_d'Eon they also have good info on the series with links to articles on the historical figures that these characters are based upon.
