I Just Love Britain is All

Kabitzin on September 9, 2006 · in Random Stuff

I just read a nice little interview with Kaoru Mori, the creator of Emma. Here are some interesting snippets:

Has sensei considered other titles using the United Kingdom as the historical setting? If so, which historical era? Would it keep a maid as the protagonist?

I really love British and maid-related materials. Therefore, even if the new title does not feature the UK or maids as the main theme I’ll try to incorporate those two factors into it.

I’m kinda surprised there weren’t more maids in R.O.D. TV.

Could you give us some hints about the basic plot of your next project?

I plan on drawing spinoffs for (side) characters in Emma. The first one would be stories of young Kelly.

Spinoff?!

After the demanding serialization of Emma has ended, would you like to experience a maid café during your break? Furthermore, do you think that your artwork has contributed directly or indirectly to the recent maid café trend?

I have been to one(s) already. However I don’t think Emma is closely related to the recent maid trend. What do you think?

It’s like comparing different flavors of Linux, I think.

Unfortunately, still no explanation of why William’s dad is always in SEED mode.

Man, I just finished up the last couple of volumes of Emma. I can’t believe Mori just ended the story at the point she did! It was certainly somewhat fitting, but leaves the fan in me aching for more. Glad to see that there is a second season of the anime in the works, though I have no idea where they got the funding for that. I read that the first season got cut short because the producers blew the budget on the high quality art and animation.

In case you haven’t seen it the first chapter of the spin off, Emma Bangai-hen, is out by the same scanlators that were doing the series. It’s more of the same goodness.

I think it’s less that the first season got *cut* short, rathre that they decided to keep it short because 1. the manga wasn’t over and 2. it’s better to make a short, well-done series than a half-baked longer series. Both extremely, extremely good choices migth I add (isn’t it ironic that this is the same studio that’s doing NARUTO?)

And maybe the very smart producers, noticing that the manga is over now and that the quality and response to the first series was good, decided to do animated justice to the rest of the manga because it would be a Very Good Thing. I suppose the director also really enjoyed doing it…

Why aren’t there maid-cafe’s in America, or if there are Why aren’t there any in the area? Maybe I should start one up. Only problem is getting girls to work there, hmmmmmmm.

Hooters has no problems with that :) It’s not the girls, it’s the investors you need to convince.

Hmm, somehow I don’t think most of America is ready for that yet. Like Satou in NHK, most people probably imagine maids as being old wrinkled ladies. That, or Mexican illegal immigrants. You’d have to convince more hot chicks to be maids through the next decade before any investment possibilities would arise.

America seems to be more into showing as much skin as possible. What seems to do well in a local bar that i’ve been to is football jersies(since football started up) and any sort of tight or revealing bottom. The place is packed and you know damn well the girls make bank from their tips. I guess it just goes to show the differences in cultures…I really wanted a maid cafe though :(
