This month has been so damn sweet, with many of the top series stepping up their game and delivering great episodes. Since I’m carrying a rather light load going into the next season, I’m excited to see what the summer season will bring!
Top Five This Month:
- The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: The concert in episode 12 was simply amazing, and upon repeated viewings, it gets even better as all the animated details come through. Will there be music videos for the singles in this episode? In spite of the episode shuffling, it looks like we’ll get a strong finish.
- Ergo Proxy: Oh the drama! It’s like having a Proxy in close Proximity makes you all emotional and messed up inside. Major points for increased Real fanservice and squabbling this month.
- Utawarerumono: Fufufu, the harem is complete, and now it’s time for the real players to come on stage. Speaking of real playas, I am just about squirming in anticipation to see how greasy and badass Hakuoro used to be in his hood.
- School Rumble 2nd Semester: That story with Sarah was pretty boring, but the basketball episodes ruled! Sarah may not have been able to handle the increased screen time, but Lala truly shined. I guess we know who really steps on Jordan now.
- Ouran Host Club: Ouran was ok this month, but didn’t offer the performance gains found in the above 4 shows. Beelzenef was not nearly as amusing as I had hoped.
Rising:
- Simoun: Finally some more fansubbage! Simoun is still going strong, and I love playing the “Predict who will sprout male gonads” game every episode.
Falling:
- Nana: I made the mistake of spoiling myself and reading the manga. This led me to the startling realization that the material covered in the movie was by far the most interesting part of the story, and that I really didn’t care for Hachi at all.

I haven’t been watching Simoun, and after reading this, I don’t think I have a reason to…
Good job! Make a conclusion based on an offhand joke!
Maybe I’m a bit repetitive, but I have to say that Ergo Proxy – eps 12-13-14-16 (ep15 is…a joke really) are some.of.the.best.stuff.I’ve.ever.seen.
This show, admittedly IS pretentious in many aspects, but this “voyage” arc is extremely good, due to superb character design, and interaction. The last ep (16) in particular re-lly pulled heavily my emo strings, I must say, it’s .. beautiful, I don’t have enough words of praise for it- I’m sure many people will find it boring and slow, but to me was .. grand (maybe that’s the best work for it – I don’t know if it’s correct) it’s most probably my best of 2006, because of this ep.
Utawarerumono is second (we’re getting to the -meat- of the story I believe), Ouran is third (the ravaging self-irony of it wins), then comes Harui Suzumiya (animation is stunningly beautiful in this one…the story leaves me a little lukewarm, I have to marathon it maybe), Nana is a little flaky, but the comedy bits are very well-done, so it’s fifth, and then comes School Rumble – always in my heart, and top-quality, but as an Eri fanboy ^^ I’m a bit disappointed that she gets almost “0″ screentime lately.
Fate/Stay Night ended just a while ago, and was very very good, but “falling short of true greatness”, as I may put it. Shirou should have taken the spicy Rin, not the plain-tofu-ish Saber. Not even a Sakura in BDSM comes close to Rin’s femaleness, imho. I’d have placed the girls in the following rooms:
Sakura -> in the kitchen,cooking
Saber -> in the dojo, training
Ilya -> in the garden, playing
Taiga-> in the living room, watching TV
Rin -> in the bedroom, doing “this and that” the whole day ^_^
I’ve been a bit disappointed with School Rumble 2nd Semester so far. Too many new characters introduced that I have no emotions invested in from the first season and the comedy is not quite on par with the first season in my opinion. That being said it’s still among the top 5 shows I look forward to the most every week.
