Those creepy Serpentine Twins have been working hard to excavate a mysterious being known as the Titan Gravity Well. It’s been alive for over 10,000 years, and is buried by layer after layer of space monster corpses. Clearly they fear the mysterious old being, and it is the Twins’ intention to harness that power. All the other Topless are at the dig site too, since they are to act as bodyguards. During one discussion, Larke proclaims that she is not like the Twins because she is a Topless even by herself, and she does not need Nono’s help at all. Of course Nono overhears this and tries to break into the dig site, hoping that the mysterious being is a free Buster Machine. When she is caught, Nono is given a reprieve, as the Twins tell her of the remains of Trente-Trois, a Buster Machine that went down 20 years ago in the 2nd battle of the Kuiper Belt and has been found on Pluto. Oddly enough, Casio offends the Twins and is given the exact same information.

While Casio tries to fight the notion that he is a washed-up ex-Topless, Nono finds herself increasingly realizing that just having a Buster Machine will not solve her problems. This is good, because it turns out that all that remains of Trente-Trois is bones and ruined armor. To complicate matters, a record number of space monsters have arrived to disrupt the dig site, and half of them veer off towards Pluto to attack Nono (as the Twins planned). Just when the Titan Gravity Well awakens, the Twins think they have received the power of a Topless that is similar to them, but the Titan Gravity Well turns on the Twins and all havoc breaks loose. Topless begin falling left and right, but Nono somehow hears Larke’s cries and warps over in an instant. Wouldn’t you know it, but she has turned into the Enpatsu Shakugan no Uchite, but with rocket launchers and her own Buster Corps. She’s got a Buster Machine in her heart, and she proceeds to then own the Titan Gravity Well with a nicely placed Buster Beam.

I was completely not expecting Nono to power up and get all fire-haired, but it was pretty awesome when Chiko asks how Nono got there so quickly and Nono matter-of-factly states that she warped. I’m not sure if Nono actually took over the space monsters that were attacking her, or if she has her own Buster Corps, but there are a lot of more pressing questions now. The identity of the Topless and the space monsters is not so simple as originally thought, and I also want to see how Larke patches things up with Nono. I assume Nono will let it slide, and it’s just up to Larke to admit to herself how much she values Nono.

Why does eating that gross crusty worm-meat make you live longer? Nikolas must be feeling really ambivalent now about the smelly “Titan Crab” he ate. I also enjoyed how the space monsters were able to contain the Titan Gravity Well by simply zerging it.

Ohoh… the 5th episode is out and it will answer some of the questions, but also unearth even more :P .

I can spoil too, if you want :) .

This episode was quite a turnaround in terms of atmosphere (it seems a lot more serious and less comedic than the previous three). There are certainly a lot of questions raised about who or what Nono is as well as the true nature of TOPLESS and the space monsters so I’m looking forward to watching ep 5 later tonight!

Is it me or do GAINAX manage to do successively bigger battles with every episode of this series? I have a few criticisms of this OVA but the over-the-top mecha combat can’t be faulted!

Progressively bigger battles is a Top wo Nerae! trademark, and if episode 5 of Diebuster and episode 6 of the original are any indication, Diebuster ep 6 will be EPIC.

Episode 5 finally ties the two shows together, too.
