It’s more Nana flashback, as we learn that Trapnest used to play with Yasu and Ren, and they were all good friends. So when Trapnest’s guitarist quit, it was perfect for Ren to step in; especially since Trapnest already had a deal with a major label. We then flashback even farther, and watch how Nana ends up in Black Stones because she is an attractive female and can sing reasonably well. From that very noble starting point, we see Nana and Ren fall deeply in love.
However, Nana doesn’t want to live her life only for Ren. She wants to make it in the music world by herself, so that she will be an equal to Ren. They get some scrub replacement guitarist, and Nana dedicates herself to honing her skill. For her 20th birthday, she decides to give herself a well-deserved present: a one-way train ticket to Tokyo.
Already knowing the story, this was only an ok episode for me. They didn’t explain the lock or the tattoo (perhaps they will later), and the pacing plodded a little. Still, I like Nana’s story, because she is so dedicated and mature. It was all shounen and inspiring, how she endured so much training to power up her singing. It’s no wonder so many people dislike Hachi, especially when Hachi is held up against Nana.
I was moved when Ren cried. They really shoulda worked some slow-mo in there, it would have heightened the drama.
