Winter 2005

by Kabitzin on December 8, 2005 in Previews

Just as we were getting comfy with the fall 2005 shows, the winter 2005 schedule arrives to steal the thunder. A lot of my favorite fall season series are winding down, so maybe I’ll be able to be more ambitious with what I cover. Once more, here are some irrational views on the new series, based on rumors and official webpages that I can’t read:

  • The King of Fighters Another Day: Hahahahahaha, no thanks! I don’t even like the game, so there is really no way I will give this series a chance. Yes, I’m sourcist.
  • Dino Breaker: Cute name, pass.
  • MAJOR 2nd Season: I bet you can’t guess who will be watching this series.
  • Wings of Rean: The art looks kinda funky, and the website has me interested. Has that mutant organic feel to it.
  • Gundam Seed Destiny Final Plus: It makes me feel like a failure at life, but I will probably watch this T__T.
  • Soukyu no Fafner – Right of Left: I didn’t watch SnF, but that sounds like an oxymoron to me.
  • Lemon Angel Project: In spite of the theme, there is a chance I may watch it if the production values are good and the music is hot. The title makes me squirm, though.
  • Magikano: Looks pretty dumb, and something about it makes me think the production values will slide, but I like the character designs. Will this involve magical harems?
  • Kagihime Monogatari Eikyu Alice Rondo: I’m not a fan of this art style, and the subject matter doesn’t look like my cup of tea.
  • Amaenaideyo!! Katsu!!: ZOMFG it’s back. Why?!
  • Kage kara Mamoru!: I know I shouldn’t leap to conclusions, but I hate it already. Not sure if it’s the potential for blood-curdling harem or the use of exclamation points in the title.
  • Yomigaeru Sora – Rescue Wing: The summary of it actually sounds kinda interesting. I’m not usually attracted to these types of titles, though, so I probably still won’t watch it.
  • Kashimashi – Girl Meets Girl: I read a bit of this manga and wasn’t impressed. It would be sweet if the climactic episode was titled “Hazumu has both?”
  • Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora: As the episode count falls, so do my standards. Might give this a chance, just for the art.
  • Meine Liebe wieder: Excellent, even more boring shounen-ai.
  • Fate/stay night: For sure, I have to see what all this hype is about. My standards are low, and I’m itching to mock!
  • Tactical Roar: The roar may be tactical, but I’m not feeling the art.
  • Rakugo Tennyo Oyui: The little girl with the tanuki tail was the only appealing part of the website.
  • REC: Love and voice acting. I am intrigued.
  • Futari wa Pretty Cure Splash Star: I heard good things about the first series, but I’ll probably pass. Why do all of this season’s shows have such long names?
  • Ergo Proxy: In large, English, font, the website proclaims The latest SF action adventure anime from “manglobe”, creator of Samurai Champloo. Ok, I’m not sure I know what you’re talking about, but you win.
  • Shinigami no Ballad: The art looks good and the episode count is small; I may be able to subdue my skepticism long enough to give this one a shot.

At the moment, I’m interested in GSD Final Plus, Fate/Stay Night, and Ergo Proxy. Wings of Rean, Lemon Angel Project, Magikano, Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora, REC, and Shinigami no Ballad will probably get a few episodes to prove themselves. Unlike in previous seasons, I’m not expecting any (aside from Ergo Proxy) of these series to be really exceptional. Hopefully these low expectations will help me find some unexpected jewels this winter =D.

Hmm… looks like I’ll only be watching Fate/stay night and Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora. Well, Ergo Proxy could be great, too, especially because they’re using Samurai Champloo to advertise it, which makes me think we’ll be seeing the same awesome production values. But to be a good series in my eyes (Samurai Champloo wasn’t), it’ll take a better story, more likeable characters, and a complete lack of rap/hip-hop.

Winter seems to be the throwaway season to dump a bunch of boring, cliched series on TV just to fill the airways. I didn’t think it was possible but they actually put together an entire season of crap. OK, there are a couple exceptions just to see if they live up to being more than just hyped eye-candy (Fate/Stay Night & Ergo Proxy), but overall it looks like I will finally be able to focus on other stuff instead of being distracted with fansubs of new shows. Thank God I could use the break!

Heh. Since I’ll be working on F/sn, I’m looking forward to your mocking. Letsee, what were the last animes where we were of different opinion early on? Mai HiME and Suzuka, I believe? ;)

Ergo proxy looks interesting. I’m curious how this one will turn out. Also, I’ll certainly follow Kashimashi, but it’s not like I’m holding my breath for greatness.

The overall quality of the winter season does look to be a bit lacking, but that doesn’t mean every show will suck. I’m sure Ergo Proxy will, at the least, ooze style, so even a mediocre story will be enough to hook me. As for Mai Hime and Suzuka, I still stand by my pokes at the early episodes, but I don’t have a problem saying that they both improved drastically. Plus, Mentar, you cheated cause you read the Suzuka manga ahead of time, and knew that it would improve!

Sometimes I enjoy watching bad anime. Either it improves, or it cleanses your palette. I actually loathe series that start good and end terrible much more than series that start terrible and end good/terrible. It’s all about your expectations going in.

Out of all these titles, the only show that really appeals to me is Yomigaeru Sora – Rescue Wing. I’m intrigued about REC so I will give it a chance. There is also a show called “Naikaku Kenryoku Hanzai Kyosei Torishimarikan Zaizen Jotaro” (That’s a mouthfull !!) that I’m curious about but I can’t find any information about it.

How many Bunny girls are there exactly in the new season ?!!

The character designs of Magikano look very similar to the ones in Tenshi no Shippo.

There is an Ergo Proxy trailer up on the site. Visually, it does look interesting.

Only interested in Ergo Proxy (forgot about this until I saw it now), Shinigami no Ballad, and Fate/Stay Night. That’s more than enough since I usually don’t even pick Summer/Winter series.

Except for Major, I don’t see anything that interests me. ;p Maybe Yomigaeru Sora or Ergo Proxy… Oh, and with the whole lot of pimpage going on Fate/Stay Night, I’ll probably check that out.

As usual of me, I’ll proceed in a very pragmatical manner:

a) get first 2-3 eps when they are available at the usual sources
b) watch them
c) check what’s worth seeing or not

I try also not to stick onto a specific genre…I throw in all sort of stuff. Suzuka for example…it’s not exactly my fav style, and I was about to discard it after the first ep, but after ep 3 …I was completely hooked.

The outlook of this winter anime season is a bit grim, imho. I have some expectations for F/S night & Ergo Proxy (more for the first).

I’m all over F/Sn and Ergo Proxy (Please let someone sub EP pretty please) Other than that, I’ll check out first eps and see what else holds my interest.

I love the trailer for Ergo Proxy. Anyone know where to find a subbed version of the trailer? Since I found it using Samurai Champloo’s website, it has to be good, they’re using it to advertise it anyway (from one of the script writers of Samurai Champloo). Visually, the style is awesome. It has sort of a rock feel to it (at least the music). But maybe it’ll be reminiscent of Shinichiro Watanabe in a sense?…depends if that screen writer helped to write not only Samuraic Champloo, but Cowboy Bebop as well. Then you would know if it had a rock feel. At first I thought it was one of Watanabe’s new ones. But this still looks good even if he’s not making it.

Of all those new anime Im interested in Kashimashi and Fate.
Fate started really well.
And Kashimashi is aired today! YEAY! Shoujo-ai anime is always welcomed. (By the way, im still wondering if it can be categorizated as Shoujo-ai… :P )
