Hayate and Shamal go out food shopping, and Hayate has noticed that everyone has been ditching her recently. Shamal feels badly about this, but of course then goes on to ditch Hayate, because Vita and Zafira need help. Signum also joins the fray, since this time Nanoha and Fate are powerful enough to go one on one (while Arf and Zafira duke it out). Nanoha’s new protection barrier is super strong, and her confusing Axel Shooter quickly puts Vita in a pinch. Signum fares better, as her and Fate are now evenly matched, although Fate’s slashes cause more fanservice damage. While everybody sorta fights and exchanges compliments, Chrono and Yuuno split up to find the Book of Darkness. Chrono is able to ambush Shamal, but before he can arrest her and read her her Miranda Rights, he gets kicked like a Gaia by a strange masked man. The Masked Kicker tells Shamal to use the Book of Darkness to break through the barrier, because escaping to fight another day is more important than being tight-fisted with the Book of Darkness. Then he kicks Chrono again. Shamal relents, and uses up several pages to summon Annihilation Lightning to bust through the barrier. The Knights escape, but the night was clearly a bad defeat for them.

Hayate manages to avoid a completely sucktacular evening by visiting Suzuka and her herd of cats. She then lays down a subtle guilt trip on Shamal for the win. Meanwhile, Amy explains how Raging Heart and Bardiche now each have three modes: Axel Shooter, Buster Mode, Full Drive Excelion and Assault Mode, Scythe Mode, Longsword Mode respectively. Since the Cartridge System is rather taxing, Amy throws in a warning to avoid using Full Drive mode for too long (especially for Raging Heart). Afterwards, Chrono explains some more about the Book of Darkness. Unlike the Jewel Seeds, the Book of Darkness is pretty much only good for destroying things and grilling burgers, and the Cloud Knights are not even human or familiars. Surprisingly, Vita, Shamal, Signum, and Zafira are nothing more than false beings of magical technology spawned by the Book, devoted completely to guarding the book, and programmed to serve their master (Hayate).

You know things are getting kicked up a notch, when they introduce the Masked Kicker. The new modes were not all that exciting, but hopefully the battles and animation will be more impressive later on. I noticed that everyone’s weapon is really polite. I was really hoping that when Signum complimented Bardiche, Bardiche would have retorted with a, “Kiss my A’s” just like in Ginban Kaleidoscope. That would have really made my day. And wait till Shamal and the others find that Hayate mixed laxatives into their broth as revenge. That’ll teach them to abandon a girl in a wheelchair.

Master kicker is actually an Archangel crew member.

You should be able to tell that by his uniform, and his tendency to spoil everyone’s fun by interfering in battles.

Hey ^_^

I found this a very enjoyable episode. The new cartridge system indeed didn’t look very impressive, but I think that they were just looking for an excuse to put some new features into Raging Heart and Bardiche. ;)

Hayate’s character became even more awesome after this, and the Masked Kicker looked weird somehow (in a good way :P ).
