I was looking for something to fill in the gaping hole left by Kaleido Star, and this odd candidate was the only thing remotely close. As it turns out, Ginban is nothing like KS (although its protagonist does occasionally look like May) – but this is not necessarily a bad thing.

We’re introduced to Tazusa Sakurano, the slightly snobbish and bratty “billion dollar girl”, an ace figure skater in the running to represent Japan in the Olympics. In contrast to Sora’s genki, ganbatte spirit, Tazusa is a bit moody, and is prone to angry super-deformed style outbursts – largely due to the immense pressure and expectations that are placed upon her by the media. We pick up with her competing in an international figure skating meet held in Canada, where she needs to catch the eye of a potential sponsor. While she performs her routine, a stunt pilot somewhere else in Canada is executing equally complex and daring maneuvers. Towards the end though, they both simultaneously screw up their critical moment, and Tazusa is knocked unconscious. The pilot isn’t so lucky though, and dies in a plane crash.

Tazusa wakes up in the hospital, and we tag along as she faces her jeering rivals, the paparazzi, and the very disappointed figure skating director for Japan. Just when it seems like it can’t get any worse, she starts hearing voices in her head. Turns out the Canadian pilot’s ghost somehow came to reside in her body, and feels everything she feels. Tazusa spends the rest of the episode trying several hilarious ways of getting rid of him, with no success.

Well, first things first. The character design in this show is rather uninspired and generic-looking. The only way I can describe it is that resembles a cheaply made game-to-anime conversion from the early 90′s. The amount of detail is pretty low in general, as seen in this incredibly nondescript building. The animation itself seems decent enough, though there are plenty of still-frames and the like. Hopefully no recycled skating footage will be used. Music thus far has been rather bland; I don’t remember any of it in particular. The opening smacked of poor production values as well, featuring black silhouettes of some animation from the episode presented on a psychedelic background. Did I mention that it was also incredibly short? I’m guessing this is one of those “makeshift” openings, like the ones Gonzo did for Speed Grapher, Trinity Blood, etc.

In spite of the lackluster presentation, I found myself enjoying the episode. Tazusa’s antics were quite amusing, and her efforts to rid herself of that pesky Canadian reminded me of the hiccups episode in Azumanga Daioh, taken to the extreme. I almost felt sorry for the ghost; having his host slam her face into the wall repeatedly, pass out in a steaming hot spa, and down an entire bottle of hot sauce must be unpleasant. He did come in handy though when the American skater started talking smack to Tazusa in her unintelligible gaijin language!

Ginban Kaleidoscope teeters on the edge of not making the blog list, but I’ll give it a couple more episodes before I decide. Who knows, it might turn out to be the next Daphne in the Brilliant Blue. They both have craptastic art, for sure.

It’s bargain bin anime, but I found this episode enjoyable in all its non-descript glory.

And remember, Peet…“No” means NO!

I agree the animation isn’t fabulous, but at least the second episode has a real theme song with OP animation and stuff. Even if it’s boring. ^_^;;

I might watch this episode just to see Tazusa’s attempts at ridding herself of the ghost. It’s nice to see you around Jeff.

Now, i’m not usually one for sports anime.. (says she who is obsessed with Suzuka..), but a CANADIAN ghost? And me, being a Canadian? I’ve been holding myself back from watching this, especially because no one has said that it’s amazing or anything. But.. lol.. somehow I think I just need to see how the Japanese portray Canadians, even if it’s only a dead one.

The opening felt very Ice X Skating to me. The engrish, however, is simply wonderful. I didn’t know that espers had the ability to speak engrish until I finished this episode.

I can only imagine what it sounded like to bystanders in the bathroom who heard the text in Jeff’s pic T__T…

I really like how big a deal they make of the fact that Peet is Canadian. Absolutely groundbreaking. And people say that there is no originality in anime these days.

Crappy animation! Non-existent opening!! Non-descript building! But so far this is the only series that has managed to make me LOL this fall season. Strange hwo things work sometimes.

This anime has no right to be as enjoyable as it is. Two episodes and still going strong. I think a lot of credit has to go to Kawasumi Ayako, who is doing a fabulous job as Tazusa. And there are bits in the animation that really are good: like when her face deforms to being like a snorting bull.

Another good reason not to give pilot licenses to underaged kids… No wonder his plane nosedived.

This series is awesome! No really! I couldn’t stop laughing!

I only found this because my brother pointed out that they would make an anime about anything and sent me a link to this show. Then when I realized it featured a Canadian (like me!) and Kawasumi Ayako (my favorite seiyuu) I knew I had to get it immediately. What I didn’t realize was that someone out there was actually blogging this, and so many ‘big names’ of the blogging world are actually watching this too… wow.

Just as a note, the building in Montreal in the beginning is a normal stadium that they used to play baseball in… it’s not for figure skating!

I’v seen the whole series and I cried…. I saw it on another site…. But where do you get the anime dvd’s to this show? I’m a Canadian too, and me and my brother heard Canadian ghost and we were there. though I wished what would REALLY happen would Peet would go away and be back again finding out that he was in a coma and search for the girl who held his spirit!!! But that did not happen in the last ep. Or stay with her….. till she would die…… Oh that last part she lives…. BUT ANYWAY does anyone know where to get the DVD’s or Manga(books) from for they aren’t in Chapters(a book store in Canada)? Or should I just wait to Anime North to start to find these?

I loved this anime. I thought the animation was pretty good, too. It was so sad at the ending, though I’m not spoiling it. TT_TT
