Yamato returns to his room to find his old “friend” Hattori Yasunobu waiting in his room. Yasunobu will also be going to the same school, and we learn in a flashback that Yasunobu has always been quite the player. This always leads to bad results for Yamato, and to steer Yasunobu away from Suzuka, Yamato says that Suzuka is like a fat, ugly, foul-mouthed, old woman. Unfortunately, Suzuka overhears this and spends much of the rest of the episode pissed at Yamato. Yamato succeeds in melting some of the ice during a grocery excursion, and he gets Suzuka to like the town a little more by showing her a nice, quiet shrine. Spurred into action by a manipulative Yasunobu, Yamato then butters Suzuka up by telling her how cool she looked while high-jumping. Suzuka is extremely pleased to hear this, but while Yamato admits to himself that he has a crush on her, he feels he’ll never be able to tell her.
It’s only episode 2, but Suzuka has clearly established itself as this season’s frontrunner in T-shirt design. Yamato’s original praise for Suzuka was pretty humorous, but I had a really hard time believing that Suzuka had never been told how cool she looked while high-jumping. I think she’s just crushing on Yamato, but I don’t blame him for taking a little time to get to know her better (they did just meet, after all). As manipulative as Yasunobu is, at least he sticks up for his friend. The mangaka, Kouji Seo, says that Yasunobu is based on one of his RL good friends, so Yasunobu will probably end up being one of those helpful, but mischievous, wingmen. Also got a glimpse of a miko, who will probably show up in a later episode.
