Reading Is Fun

by Kabitzin on June 21, 2005 in Random Stuff

I know there are some manga readers out there, so I figured I’d put forward another pick-em topic. If you were to recommend 5 fairly recent manga series to a friend, what would you recommend? I’ll start off with my top 5:

  1. Naruto: I don’t care how overexposed Naruto gets, this manga series is just about everything a good shounen manga series ought to be.
  2. Mahou Sensei Negima: In spite of the random fanservice every few pages, I really love this manga series. The characters are all wonderful, and the art is simply fantastic.
  3. Yakitate: The logical part of me still refuses to believe that a manga series about baking bread can be this interesting. Who knew bread competitions could be so tactical?!
  4. Shaman King: Much better art than the anime, with a better story, too. Yoh is one of my favorite characters ever.
  5. Mahoujin Guru Guru: Somewhat lesser known, this cute spoof of the oldschool RPG genre is adorable and wickedly funny.

As you may have guessed, my tastes in manga run more heavily shounen than my anime tastes. I didn’t really put forth anything surprising, and so I was hoping some readers could help me broaden my horizons. I also considered some Oh Great! titles for the list, but in the end I decided that while I love his beautiful art, his stories are not that riveting.

I amazed myself by not cheating on the list this time.

In no particular order:

* One Piece: I just have to throw this in. OP is one of the series which consistently entertains me. Somehow, the absurd makes sense in this world.
* Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge: Some kind of Goth-infused comedy.
* HanaKimi: Another one of those gender-bending series with obvious shounen-ai influences. Although its the gag which makes it a light but enjoyable read.
* Nodame Cantabille: I can’t really describe this but it is one of the titles which surprised me the most recently.
* Fullmetal Alchemist: What can I say? I am indeed an FMA-fangirl.
