With the looming melon bread bake-off coming up, Tsukino becomes especially worried about the wager that he had made with Mizuno since Kazume confessed that Melon bread wasn’t a bread he that he was especially strong in. Ken however mentioned that there is an “unfinished” component of melon bread that any baker has yet to solve: the integration of cookie dough and bread dough without underbaking the cookie and overbaking the bread. Unfortunately, bakers had been trying for 70 years to solve this problem without any resolve, so all hope seemed lost for Kazuma to pull out the victory.

Fortunately and seemingly out of the blue, the sushi maker from episode 9 makes sort of a random appearance to cheer up the crowd with his incredible sushi. In addition, Kazuma gains some inspiration watching the sushi maker put together the sushi, and Kazuma rushes to the supermarket to get his “secret ingredient”. As you can see from the screenshots, Kazuma’s melon bread is a big hit :P

Man…who would have figured a hamburger-like idea for a bread would be such a simple solution to the incomplete melon bread :P But I suppose with Kazuma being a simple person, he could only come up with such a simple but elegant solution. This episode was chock-full with great expressions, from the reactions eating the sushi to Ryou chewing out the first failed baker :D The next episode will showcase Kawachi’s attempt to move on in the bakeoff, but it seems that he may be underestimating his opponent if the last picture before the NEW ending song is any indication. Also, everyone must watch Ken break it down on the dance floor in the new ending :)

What was with all the CG in this episode? Do animators no longer know how to draw spheres???

Haha, maybe they were influenced by those Dear Boys animators. CG melons are like upgraded CG basketballs!

It’s been a while since I saw this episode but IIRC, the scene in question uses a similar ‘Bullet Effect’ technique (that overused Matrix 360 degree camera angle). This effect is impossible to achieve using 2D animation. The effect requires all sides of the Melon to be seen. If that had been in 2D, when the Melon is on the side, you’ll see nothing but a flat line.
