After an extremely brief and lame recap by Jin, the threesome is back to stylish hijinks that have nothing to do with the Sunflower Samurai. While at a tavern, Fuu discovers that Mugen is only capable of reading one word (“no” の). An enthusiastic drunk lectures Mugen about the importance of reading, but then he passes out and Mugen sticks him with their bar tab. The drunk gets revenge by psuedo-capturing Mugen the next day, and Fuu is set upon by two brothers, Tatsunoshin and Kazunosuke. The two belligerent graffiti artists are the sons of Niwa, who had once helped out Jin (and so Jin promised to watch over them). Jin finally agrees to get them to settle their differences by having a graffiti contest, but in the end they are beaten by the newly literate Mugen. It all ends happily, however, when the two brothers are recruited by ultra-flamboyant designer Uhori of Andouya to “send a fresh breeze through the stagnant fashion industry.”

They certainly wasted no time getting back to business as usual, and once more there was very little plot development. By this point, I don’t even care, because complaining that Samurai Champloo has no plot development is like complaining that mahou shoujo shows have too much stock footage. Poor Fuu had her self-esteem shot down again, but a guy has already died for her in this series, so she has nothing to complain about. There was some neat switchblade action, and a little swordplay, but this episode was mostly comedic.

BTW, whatever happened to Mugen’s Kabuto beetle…?
