At long last, Midori wakes shows up to reveal her brilliant deductions to the rest of the HiMEs. Most of the HiMEs brood for a few seconds, and then turn concerns to the upcoming tamayura matsuri (why don’t any anime series ever feature the kanamara matsuri festival?) festival where everyone can get dressed up in yukata’s! Mai agrees to go on a date with Reito, Shiho gets dolled up hoping to get all Da Capo with Tate, and Akane shows Takumi how to win at rigged festival games. Love is in the air until Tate interrupts a Reito-Mai kiss and everyone starts feeling all sad and awkward. Meanwhile, Natsuki is exploring Iwasaki Pharmaceutical, trying to figure out why they have a file on Akane, when she happens upon a frightening sight. Oh yeah, Alyssa shows up and blows the hell out of a bridge before summoning the mighty Golden Fleet in order to open Valhalla’s Gate, but that wasn’t really all that important since Miyu and Alyssa weren’t in yukata’s.
I’m starting to cut Nagi some slack. Maybe it’s cause he hasn’t been balancing books on his head or scaling tall objects, but somehow he seems a little bit cooler lately. I mean, check out his sweet shirt! In fact, my evil receptors have been tuned onto Reito lately. I’m sure he’s evil and just trying to seduce Mai. Overall, this was a very good episode, and quite a bit of mystery was thrown in. For instance, what exactly did Natsuki see in that cell? And how great is Akane’s VA at making that bloodcurdling scream of horror and sadness?! Incidentally I didn’t figure out who was in the cell until several hours later when I was driving, and the rush of possibilities almost made me swerve off the road (“Kazu-kun…? Hmmmm… waitafreakingminute!!!”). Yeah, I’m pretty slow.
Every time I see the Director, I wish they had animated this scene from the manga…

the Director, actually the majority of the Mai-HiME cast seem a lot more funny in the manga than the anime. Then again, the anime and manga go completely different directions so.. yea. I would have loved to see the more “sexy” Natsuki from the manga animated in the anime as well…. esp hitting on Tate w/ Shiho around? That would have been a kick!

That scene from the manga is also my favourite Mashiro scene. Here’s a little kid who acts like an adult. And then a couple of minutes later, her maid tells her to do her homework. How embarassing.
It’s not so much that I _like_ Nagi now, it’s just that I don’t think to myself “Maybe this will be the episode that Nagi dies” before I double click a Mai Hime file.
