Uchuu no Stellvia Review

I usually hate space genre series, but I admit defeat on this one. I absolutely loved Stellvia, and I think that I enjoyed almost every single episode from start to finish. I didn’t want to try it at first, but after reading the posts at Jeff’s site and listening to Ender’s high praises for it, I capitulated. I’m glad I did, because Stellvia is a very good, and very complete series that offers something for everyone. The music is excellent throughout the entire series (with fabulous OP and ED) and really reinforces the mood. Although the struggle to save our solar system against impending doom may not seem like a very original concept, Stellvia tells the story through its characters in a way that I found new and fascinating. The struggles and celebrations of the group as a whole really define the series, and above all Uchuu no Stellvia features a fabulous ensemble of interesting and likable characters. By the end, I had even come around on cheering for Shima (in spite of her being so bratty in the middle of the series). I’d say Uchuu no Stellvia has three main segments: the beginning is kind of a happy, fluffy section, the middle is full of melodrama, and the end is one of those stand-up-and-cheer action-packed stories where you are left with a feeling of elation when the good guys win. As different as they seem, all three mesh extremely well, and give us an in-depth look at characters that grow and make us love them. Stellvia may not be as well known as it should be, but I would have to say that the series is definitely a classic.

Kabitzin’s Rating: 5/5

Yup, it’s definitely good :) I’ll pick up at least a few of the DVDs.

btw, on Moonphase’s site a sequel is listed for next year ;)
