The trio enters an eating contest thinking that it’s an easy way for free food. As it turns out, however, there is an entry fee, and Mugen impulsively bets both his and Jin’s swords (I think Fuu throws in a bright pink tanto…). Although Fuu displays amazing eating skills, she is defeated (due to a silly mistake) by uber-gaegh Dutch samurai Isaac Kitching, aka Jouji. Isaac agrees to give back the swords if the trio will take him on a tour of Edo. Jin quickly lies that he is known as the “Map of Edo” and they are on their way. Isaac finally tells the story of how he found a book that made him believe that Japan would be some kind of yaoi heaven for him, and then it is revealed that he is an important member of a Dutch trading company. Before they part ways, Fuu shows off her skull of death keychain that she got from the sunflower samurai, and Isaac warns her not to show the keychain around. Then they follow his tip to head towards Nagasaki.

It was interesting to learn that the Dutch brought sunflowers to Japan. The whole first half of this episode had a very Nathan’s-hotdog-eating-contest kind of feel to it. I actually caught that on tv this year, and after watching Sonya Thomas’ impressive showing, I’m not really that surprised at Fuu’s eating prowess. I’m glad that more and more clues about the sunflower samurai are being revealed, because the plot really needs to get a move on.

Whoa, Sonya Thomas is scary — 65 Hard Boiled Eggs in 6 minutes, 40 seconds? *shudder*
