Bakuretsu Tenshi 09

Sei drags Meg and Amy along to a tacky party that is trying extremely hard to be Chinese. As the granddaughter of the leader of Bai Lan (“White Lotus”), she’s a star in this setting. Her Grandfather has arranged a marriage between her and Jay in order to join together the White Lotus clan and the Black Lotus clan (which had split with the White Lotus in the past). Jay’s only after the Seal of the White Lotus clan, however, and the whole joining is just a ploy. There’s a lot of action, and Meg goes postal after a heavy dose of chi. There are some images of a flying white tiger (ok WTF). No Jango, though.

Episode 9 successfully walks the fine line between interesting and stupid. In fact it’s filled with tons of stupidity, and yet quite interesting at the same time. I was utterly horrified when Meg becomes a cross between Bruce Lee and Chun Li, but all the bad Chinese in the episode was pretty enjoyable. I really liked the banter between Kyohei and Jo back at the base, especially when Jo was watching the savages stab a guy with a spear while stabbing her own ketchup with the french fry. I guess the Chinese outfits/hair were vaguely interesting as well. Over the last three episodes, it seems like the writers realized that Sei totally sucked, and have desperately tried everything possible to make her an appealing character. Suddenly she’s a superstar gangster who’s manipulative and yet sensitive and possibly even vulnerable. Also, I guess Bai Lan is an organization, and not actually the nickname of a specific person. I could be wrong however, since I was focused on the horrific transformation of Meg into Bruce Lee. As a side note, there is only a short discussion about brains in this episode as Amy stresses that brains are important (she’s been hanging out with Sei too much), while Meg says brains are unimportant (too much time with Jo).

At what point does Sei rename herself O-Ren Ishii/Cottonmouth? And by the end of this series, Kyohei will never be able to get insurance on his scooter.
