Dear Boys 05-06

Just like in a shoujo series, Mutsumi’s slap totally brings Fujiwara back to his senses. Mizuho makes a big run to open the second half, but then the “guard crushing” begins. Jerk coach has his toadie of a point guard intentionally foul Fujiwara, hoping to exploit Fuji’s gimpy knee. Moriyama from the other team eventually has to tell coach to stop this tactic, and they change their tactic from gonad-crushing to playing really tall goony guys. It works at first, but Ishii sinks the final shot, and Mizuho wins. Then everyone goes to Coach’s house and reminisces about the past; it seems Fujiwara was a cheerful, friendly guy when he first came to Mizuho. Later, Anzaki makes her debut and rains on Fujiwara’s parade when she asks if he’s going to let his gimpy knee wreck Mizuho’s chances at success.

I can’t understand why everyone was blaming Ishii at first for his foul on the big fella. I’d foul with 13 seconds too, rather than give up a dunk that would put Narita up 2 points. Centers usually shoot poorly from the free throw line, and the big guy is a 1st year bench warmer. As it turns out, Ishii made the right choice. If anything, Aikawa’s three pointer from mid-court (getting blocked too!) with 5 seconds on the clock was 10x stupider than Ishii’s foul. The referees that were monitoring the game were pretty crappy, although to be fair it was just a practice game.
